Considering moving to France for 5 months

heathermt

Hi!

My husband and I are in our early 50s and retired.  Our son is in grade 8 in Canada.  We are considering spending his second semester of grade 9 in France.

Trying to decide what city to live in.  I'm not keen on Paris - too big.

We would like to be able to travel to other countries while there.

Open to suggestions.  Based on some reading, maybe Lille?

Thanks!

Heather

Hi Heather. You dont say whether your son already speaks French . This might make decisions easier. Bordeaux and Lyon are two cities that come to mind that might suit you, and perhaps Toulouse? Montpellier might also fit the bill.  Nobody can really say what might suit you with so little information to go on. Perhaps you can fill out some interests other than travelling to other countries? Does your son play any sports? His interests? Yours?

Looking forward to hearing more about your special requirements.

We spent some time in the South of France last year and loved every place we visited. I can recommend, Nice, Aix-en-Provence, Toulouse, Avignon, Arles, Bordeaux, ST. Emilion etc. Etc. The best thing would be to settle in one place and then take trips to other places. Avignon is probably the most central. It's endlessly beautiful.

Best of Luck

Thank you for your reply.  My son and I speak French but my husband does not at all.

We only plan to live in France for 5 months so we are looking for a community that will be comfortable to live in, where we can easily travel to other countries, where there is an International school where classes are taught in French, and the community is accepting of those from other countries (my husband is Chinese but I am not).   My husband would love to be able to drive his motorcycle and he enjoys wind and water sports (kiteboarding especially).  I enjoy walking and hiking.  My son enjoys TKD and soccer and basketball but he is open to anything active.

Nice would be a good choice though it becomes very touristy i season. Go off season. It has an international airport the fast train which makes getting around easy. There's also a large expat group which is helpful.  Marseille, which is the second largest city in France also has a lot to offer though certain parts have rather high crime rates. We also loved Toulouse.
