The latest scam by Edesur -  not invoicing monthly!  They  read my meter every two months and invoice me every two months always at the HIGHEST rate per KWH!

@planner  Is that because of a discount with lower usage? With Luz y Fuerza, our power utility in LT, the rate is 14.95/kwh, but if you consume less than 200 kwh in the billing period, you receive a 50% discount. If that is the case, then reading meters/billing every other month is pretty shady!

NO it does not work that way with the EDE distributors.

With them: There is a small base fee PLUS

0 - 200 KWH  = 6.05 each

201- 300 = 8.59 each

301 - 700 = 12.89 each

Over  700  = 13.09 for ALL

And that is a private electricity company not one of the EDE and you don't face the issues with outages the EDE system does

Those EDE rates are much better in SD than they are in Las Terrenas or Punta Cana.  I wish they were a bit cheaper here, or on a tiered usage.  Peak times, mid-peak times, low times, etc.  We used this system in Canada and it would also be helpful here to help balance overload during mid-day when businesses use it most.  Could help with power outages.

Although, I'm sure it could be a large cost for new metering 😕

You dont have  EDE  rates in Las Terrenas or Punta Cana (depending exactly where you are) YOU HAVE PRIVATE ELECTRIC companies that create their own rates!

The EDE's charge the same rate  regardless of  whether it is EDESUR, EDEESTE, EDENORTE!  The rates are set - period. ALL  private  providers charge what they  think the market will  accept!

Luz y Fuerza used to use their own generator but because of public unrest over very high rates, Edenorte installed a power line to Sanchez and supply Luz y Fuerza and the nearest generator is at Pimental. The distribution is in LT is owned by L & F. It is still much lower than several years ago and less than in PC and Bayahibe.

At least you seem to get a much better service than Edenorte customers on the North Coast and a significant discount if a low user which applies to most locals.

Gotta love privatization.  Same thing happened in Canada.  These basic services should not be privatized in any country 😕

LT gets the worst of both - the high rates because we have a private company distributing and setting rates, and frequent outages because we rely on Edenorte to provide the power.

So glad we installed solar!! If the solar power works as well as our solar water heater, I'll be happy!! We just finished installing the panels and haven't moved in yet, so no idea how much energy is being generated or how much we'll be using.

I tested the hot water for the first time yesterday and it was hot!! Hopefully, we'll be taking our first hot showers in the house tomorrow night. Fingers crossed we can move in tomorrow!

Incredible that past governments spent 3.5 billion dollars on a dirty coal plant that is out of service so often yet supposed to provide one third of country's needs.

Needlees to say ther are and will be power cuts for some in a hot period.

The bad news is that the electricity distribution companies are still losing large sums of money and whilst still being heavily subsidized by government despite increases of income from price rises. This is the decades long result of inefficiency letting the public purse pay for a very poor service. A strong dose of Thatcherism is needed to help this very sick patient. The all party agreed electrical reform is still not working but needs persistence whilst the opposition parties are backing off and want yet more subsidies.

Electricity and should distribution companies register losses above 31%


Until April 2022, the energy losses of the Electricity Distribution Companies ( EDE ) stood at 31.3%, for a decrease of 1.3 percentage points compared to those registered as of December 2021, when they amounted to 32.6%.

In particular, the Eastern Electricity Distribution Company ( Edeeste ) continues to show more losses: they stood at 48.4% in the last month of 2021, although in April of this year they fell to 45.4%, for a decrease of 2.9 percentage points.

The Electricity Distribution Company of the South ( Edesur ) presents losses of 25.7% as of April 2022. In December 2021 they were around 26.1%. On the other hand, the Northern Electricity Distribution Company ( Edenorte ) presents 21.4%, for a decrease of 0.5 percentage points between January and April 2022; in December 2021 losses reached 21.9%........................................

Absolutely ridiculous!  Serious  issues that need a serious solution that DOES NOT involve the damn gov't corruption.

We just received an interesting bill from Luz y Fuerza! For the months of March, April, and May, our bills showed 0 kwh used! The ending meter reading in February was the same as the ending reading in May. Even though we weren't in the house, we knew that was wrong and had been asking LyF to look into it. The builder was using some power for construction, including a water pump any time they were mixing concrete, and with a watchy here at night, lights were being used and his phone was being charged.

Now we get the June bill and it has a completely different (and lower) beginning reading, and a new counter/contador number. No one told us about any problem found on the meter even though I brought up the possibility with them, and no one told us the meter was being replaced! It's hard to tell if this is at all accurate since we have nothing to compare it to, but even with our solar not going online until a couple of weeks into the month, 640 kwh and 9700 DOP seems excessive!

I've sent copied of the bills from February, May and June to the one person in customer service who speaks English. Hopefully, I'll get a clear answer on what the heck happened!

If that was all it was, I wouldn't be too worried, but the fact that there is obviously a new meter has me concerned!

Abinader stops increases in electricity rates and summons the CES to review the Electric Pact

He recalled that the Government subsidizes 1,000 million dollars annually to the electricity sector (plus more than another half million in fuel subsidies now)


President Luis Abinader announced this Tuesday that the Government will suspend the staggered increases in the electricity rate that were scheduled from now on in the Electric Pact, and asked the Economic and Social Council (CES) to convene the social, political and business sectors to review the aforementioned Agreement.

"The government has determined to stop the next increases in the electricity rate until the economic circumstances of the Dominican Republic change" and "we are going to go to the Economic and Social Council to adapt that pact," Abinader said.

This week the Executive Branch sent a letter to the CES to review the agreement and adapt it to the circumstances of an international crisis.

Abinader reminded the opposition, which today opposes the rate increases, that the pact was signed by them. "It was signed by those who now say they disagree, at the National Palace, in 2020," he added. He criticized them because, according to him, they do not present an alternative to the problem.

The president recalled that the Government subsidizes 1,000 million dollars annually to the electricity sector and has 30 billion pesos in fuel subsidies. In addition, it subsidizes wheat, rice and fertilizers.

Regarding the concern of some economists about the growing burden assumed by the State with this policy, Abinader responded that he prefers "not to continue raising the burdens on the people and that the effort and sacrifice be made by the Government."

He defended that his administration has maintained lower deficits than projected, and that it is being built while inflation is contained, at a time when a fiscal reform was not carried out either.

The president spoke for 10 minutes with the journalists at the end of the act in which the Dominican Municipal League (LMD) and the Comptroller General of the Republic signed an agreement with which they jointly initiated the National Program for the Improvement of Municipal Internal Control .

Anyone having trouble getting on to Edenorte.com?  I can get to the main page at times but can’t get to the virtual office to see my bill. Wondering if it’s down or if I’m having issues because in in the States.

Probably a site issue!  Today Banco Popular is having issues communicating with all the electrical distributors. Meaning I cannot pay the bills online today.

Another forum says it's been ongoing for several weeks.  But of course, you're still expected to pay your bill, even though they don't send it to you or allow you to access their site.  Our bill shows up 3 weeks after the due date.  We use our bank to pay, and at least it still has the current info, when I remember to log in and pay it.

Sadly this is the same for almost all bill paying. You have to remember the due dates. You have to check accuracy. You have to be ready to pay on various ways!


By the way, due dates seem to shift on a whim!
