Health Insurance over 65

@planner I see, there are more expensive than USA. I will follow your advice, thank you@

@snowinpalm Did you try Humano, they cover people over 70. Also SENASA Contributivo I hear people saying they  have improved coverage, and now even cover catastrophic illnesses.

@vkathy59  Enquire about Seguros Pepin, and a Seguro de Ley, might interest you.

Two insurance questions:

1. Dermatology is not covered by insurance?

2.Say you have cosmetic surgery which obviously is not covered by insurance. Some time later regular health issues associated with the cosmetic surgery, will insurance cover the later regular health issues or provide problems in paying?

@stealth19  . i want to know if a 76 year old can enroll in health insurance plan .

I used to belong to Mapfre health insurance. i was part of a small group insurance run by a agent in Sosua . last year they double my premium. i am 76 years old and have been in tihis group for over 11 years . premium went to nearly 8500 pesos a month. I asked agent to provide me with a document proving that insurance company really raised the rates so high. I said I would pay if the agent provided the proof . Agent did not provide proof and canceled my insurance. Is there some thing that can be done. Now i have no insurance.

Wow  go directly to Mapfre and bypass the agent!  Immediately and bring proof!  They should be able to reinstate you

@planner is this still a valid and viable option?

No they pulled this product and it's no longer available. Sorry.

As far as I know, currently,  there is no private insurance available here for over age 65.

@planner thank you for the update amd soeedy replies.

I need some clarification.

No private insurance for ex-pats over 65?  or, no private insurance for citizens?  I ask as my partner is a citizen and over 65.

Thank you.

I am talking about private insurance only.

Supposedly there is something thru Senasa for Dominicans. I can't confirm.

@planner thank you as always for your assistance.

I am grateful and thankful for this forum and to all those who have provided me with information and assistance.

My partner and I are super-excited to start the next chapter of our lives in the Dominican Republic.

I hope you planner have un dia maravilloso!

De nada! Keep us posted on your progress!

@planner will do!

@planner

Hello!

I would like to ask 2 questions... I am 65 and will be moving there hopefully soon (waiting on my property build to complete). Does health insurance increase annually for retirees over 65 or does it decrease each year for people above 65?  Should I purchase private health insurance before or after I move to the DR?  Thank you. Be well.

@rehher123

At 65 years old your choices will be extremely limited to purchase Healthcare Insurance in the DR. There are 1 or possibly two companies you can purchase.

However, I will let @planner provide more details.

You can only get Senasa and it is extremely limited.  Premiums will increase annually based on usage with them.

If you are under age 65 get insurance immediately!

Because insurance here is not based on age for premiums, as a general rule premiums double at age 70 and again at age 80.  Until then a 64 year old pays the same as a 20 year old.

Earlier this year I purchased medical/health insurance from Seguros Universal which includes dental.  I was just turning 65 so I did get it in time. I wanted insurance because there is always a chance you can get in a serious car accident here.   I want to be able to go to hospital and get treatment without having to pay out of pocket.  So now I have this assurance but hopefully I dont have to use it.

I dont have medical issues now and I dont take any medications.   I live in Canada for half of the year so if I need something I can get it there but wait times are very high.  I expected discounts for my DR insurance because of my excellent health, but there are none.   Was told premiums go up every year based on their costs, expect 10% but they do look at your claims, if there are none, its likely there is not going to be much of an increase.

NOTE:   If you say you dont have any medical issue and then you make a claim for one, if they decide it was pre-existing, then the claim will be denied.  This is how they verify what you told them in the application.  The options you receive in the package includes things you do not need, like maternity care.  You are paying for a package which ends up funding others who use it.  I just hope I never need to use it, and then I dont mind so much if my premiums will help others in need.  First year premium $78,000 RD.

This is a similar strategy many of my group members have.  They only are here  5 to 7 months of the year but have the insurance just in case its needed. That is the reason for insurance after all.  Like car insurance you pay it and hope to never have a claim.  With medical insurance  its similar, you hope to never have a huge claim or need!

To everyone - do not wait until after 65 to try to get coverage!
