Why invest in the Dominican Republic? Legal benefits for foreigners

Martha Sánchez Luxus

For many years, the Dominican Republic has established itself as one of the most attractive destinations in the Caribbean for foreigners interested in investing, relocating, or settling permanently.

Beyond its location, climate, and quality of life, the country boasts a legal framework strategically designed to attract foreign investment and foster economic development.

What incentives exist and why were they created?

- Law No. 171-07, on Special Incentives for Pensioners and Retirees with Foreign-Source Income, which was enacted to attract pensioners and individuals with passive income from abroad.

This law arose in response to the need to stimulate the economy by attracting foreign currency, offering benefits such as:

                                • Tax exemptions on foreign income

                                • Facilities for importing personal goods

                                • Incentives for acquiring property

Law No. 158-01, or the CONFOTUR Law, as it is known locally, aims to promote the development of the tourism sector, thereby fostering growth in strategic areas nationwide. Its benefits include:

        • Exemption from property taxes (IPI)

  1. Exemption from real estate transfer taxes
  2. Tax incentives for approved projects

Law No. 16-95 establishes the general framework for foreign investment in the country. This law was created to guarantee equal conditions between domestic and foreign investors, ensuring:

• Freedom of investment in most sectors.

• Right to repatriate capital.

• Legal certainty in transactions.

Investing in or settling in a foreign country involves more than just choosing a good property; it also means understanding the legal framework that protects that investment.

The Dominican Republic offers very favorable conditions, but having the right advice is what truly makes the difference between a good decision and a difficult experience.

If you are considering investing in or moving to the country and would like to know how these benefits can apply to your situation, I would be happy to help.

Welcome to the forums. This is good information.

Not to be jaded, we have had many lawyers offer information and then they disappear, never to answer a question on here.

The exception is Lishali Baez who specializes in residency and related items.

Let's see if you stick around!  We hope so!
