Anything much new on the north coast over the last 5 years as last time there? Started going to the DR 25 years ago but was always single, and now taking my fiance to enjoy the beaches. Thanks in advance for tips as landing in POP.

Well it's not on the beach but ya gotta eat, so when in Puerto Plata, for an inexpensive and ambience-rich dining treat I recommend Empana House, which is on a side street (Calle El Morro) just off Av. 27 de Febrero (a major north/south street) about 1/2 mile inland. They do nothing but empanadas and they do them very, very well. There's clear signage on the street, then you have to walk down an alley to a super-cute outdoor dining area with lots of greenery and usually some good island music on widescreen TV. When I was there it was too hot to eat outdoors so I just got carry-out, but if it was cool enough, it would be a nice place to hang out for awhile.

Las Terrenas is smaller, quieter, and probably the nicest beaches in the country....

I will suggest staying at Playa Dorada. From there as home base there is lots to see and do!
