Hi!  Is it still possible to overstay and pay for it, or to apply to overstay, for more than 120 days (4 months)?  Previously that was very clear on the website, but now I see only up to 120 days.  I had been hoping to stay longer on my next visit.

120 days is the max - orignal

30 days plus a 90 day extension. If you plan to stay longer, you should look at residency options.

Went down to the government building in puerto plata , the women in charged ( Manger’) told me in no uncertain terms would her office or any office outside of  Santa Domingo would anyone supply me with a copy of any kind of visa extension and she added that Santa Domingo might not give one either , she told me to just pay @ the airport on my way out….. I also asked about maybe being flagged for overstaying without permission in the future , her and the other 2 people working there just laughed and said pay at the airport on your way out , I tried to explain that I’m driving here and was worried about getting into an accident while I’m past my visa time and again she laughed and said nobody and nobody cares if your here 30 days or 130 day the accident if happens will be treated like any other…. Time I left there I felt like a real idiot, will not attempt that again , the people looked at me like I was nuts and just taking up their time

Given the experience of @Eugenevandyke being told by an official to pay at the airport, does anyone have experience with successfully extending their visa the "official" way?

People from tourist card countries enter the DR visa free.Paying money does not "extend a visa" of any kind for such people.  There is a legal residency program for those that want to legally be in the DR. 

Tourist card country people can legally stay for 30 days.  If they want to stay longer they currently pay money for that option. Call it a fee, call it a fine, whatever you feel good about.   Ahead of time you can pay for a total of 120 days. That payment does not extend the validity of a foreign driving license past 30 days. I checked this myself at the local INTRANT office and was told a foreign license is valid for 30 days after entry, period..   But I know people that drive for years without issues on foreign licenses after entering on tourist cards. 

Paying money does not mean they are legally in the DR during that time past 30 days.  The DR government does not care how long people from tourist card countries stayin the DR.  Stay forever and just pay the money as you go out.  So far that works. .

Being as confused as pretty much everyone else appears to be on the subject of tourist (card) extension. There actually aren't anymore cards.  I went to DGM main office the day before yesterday to officially inquire about this and was handed a piece of paper that gives instructions on how to do this. Others, including legal professionals seem to be of the opinion that these extensions do not exist for visa free travelers.

I haven't gotten a response from DGM yet, but i would like to know from someone that actually knows, fist hand, not word of mouth (gossip) how this is handled.  I mentally can't reconcile the fact a country with 13 million anual tourists doesn't have a better handle on this process and also only offers a rinse and repeat never ending leave and come back scheme or pay 1500 dollars for overstaying for 10 years.  I was contemplating to stay 120 days, fly to Jamaica for a week (at least the first time) come back and repeat until I overcome my toxic aversion to return to my birth country for the first time in 40 years, to process some kind of residency. So, the question is, is there or isn't there an extension one can request? And also, from somebody that actually knows, what is their experience on overstaying and how long do they recommend one should maximally overstay without getting into being rejected on the next entry.

Legal residency is the only way to stay in the country legally. That is why there is a legal residency program.  Paying for extra time does not mean you can drive legally past 30 days on a foreign license, for example.

Anything else past 30 days on a tourist card  is just an extra legal work around of the actual tourist card validity period.

That explanation of "extensions and exit payments" was provided by a very large law firm in the DR.

Now , the truth be told,  The DR government does not care how long you stay when you enter on a tourist card.

That is why they still have the "exit fees" for overstaying.
