Declare a baby

Shaly999

Hi!

I am just wondering once you give birth in Costa Rica (American citizen - not Costa Rican Mom), how much time (weeks?) do you have to declare the baby? Is it true that Costa Rica takes the baby if he is not declared before a deadline?

Thanks,
Shaly

I looked at the Costa Rica Birth Registration (http://www.tse.go.cr/pdf/ifed/registro_ … a_rica.pdf)  and Art. 25 on the first page reads: "Dentro  del  término  de  cuarenta  días  de  nacida  una  persona  debe  hacerse  la  declaración  ante  el Registrador del respectivo lugar donde se haya verificado el nacimiento", meaning there are 40 days to register the new born.   It does not say anything about what happens if the new born isn't registered. Reading down, page 5 has a screenshot showing not Art.25 but Art. 21 saying that there are 21 days to register the new born. Go figure what to believe.

In important matters always consult an attorney. I'd consult an immigration/residency attorney on this.
