US Credit in Belize

fishing2

Can anyone tell me if your US credit scores from the three reporting agencies pertain at all to renting or buying property, using utilities, etc. in Belize?

In terms of utilities, there is no system for conducting credit checks in Belize, let alone viewing your U.S. credit. Normally a landlord or utility company will require a deposit, which is forfeited should you not pay your obligations.

It\'s very hard to get a real estate loan in Belize without putting a significant amount of money down (at least 50% is my understanding, but maybe one of our resident real estate agents can elaborate on that, and if they look at your U.S. credit). My gut tells me they don\'t look at your U.S. credit, but rather your bank accounts (reserves, ability to pay), and your U.S. tax returns (a mortgage lender here told me that they require those to process a loan).

Hope that helps. Sharon Hiebing
