Planning Our Semi-Retirement in Sri Lanka – Seeking Advice

seanjoachim2

Hi everyone,

My name is Sean (55) and my partner Jessica (50) and I are based in Australia. We're planning to semi-retire in Sri Lanka within the next year or so. “Semi” meaning we may stay for 2 years or possibly longer, depending on how things unfold.

We’re doing some reconnaissance work to better understand the realities of migrating and settling in Sri Lanka, and I’d love to hear from fellow expats who’ve gone through similar journeys. I’ve got three key questions below and would really appreciate any insights, recommendations, or even cautionary tales.

1. 🇱🇰 Migration Agencies for Sri Lankan Residency

My late parents were Sri Lankan, so I’m pursuing citizenship by descent. While I’ve started the process through an Australian-Sri Lankan consultant, it’s clear that most of the action (and bottlenecks) happen at the Sri Lankan Department of Immigration.

Are there Sri Lanka-based migration agencies that assist with this process—ideally with a proven track record and legitimacy? Most agencies seem geared toward helping Sri Lankans migrate out of the country, but I’m looking for help with the reverse.

2. Financial Institutions & the My Dream Home Visa

We’re also considering the My Dream Home Visa, and we’re comfortable with the financial requirements (US$15,000 fixed deposit + monthly remittance of US$1,500 + US$750 per dependent).

However, I’ve heard concerning stories about difficulties withdrawing funds when expats decide to return home. Some banks reportedly delay or refuse transfers, citing compliance or liquidity issues. Others have had to escalate through legal or financial advisors.

Has anyone here experienced this firsthand? Can you recommend reliable banks or financial professionals who can help avoid these issues?

3. 🏠 Long-Term Leasing & Housing

When looking for long-term accommodation (6+ months), what platforms or methods do expats find most effective?

From overseas, we’re mostly limited to Airbnb and Booking.com, but I’ve also explored ikman.lk and lankapropertyweb.com.

Are there better options or local contacts worth knowing? And are there any scams or pitfalls we should be aware of when leasing property in Sri Lanka?

Thanks in advance for any advice or stories you’re willing to share. We’re excited about this next chapter and want to make informed decisions with help from those who’ve walked the path before us.

Warm regards,

Sean & Jessica
