Buy British

Enzyte Bob

Today on FB an add popped up saying Buy British, it said Authentic British Groceries.

Since it seems URL's get blocked here, just Google Buy British Philippines.

This has been mentioned before. They have a wide selection but the prices used to be quite high.

I haven't looked this time, so decide for yourselves.

Come to think of it I do recognise this service I saw advertised some time ago.

As a Brit there are two names on the link  that Fred helpfully posted. Waitrose are the poshest supermarket group in the UK and VERY highly rated on customer service. I can vouch for this as it is my local store in Bath UK. A case in point: two years ago I had ordered a Scotch sirloin joint (c 2KG) for xmas at a price of about £60 (US$ 78). You give them the collection date a few days before xmas day. The joint had not come in on the day I was due to collect and they were not sure if it would arrive in time but I can pick anything I like on the fresh beef counter. I said I'll wait until  tomorrow. It arrived the next day. The lady at the collection counter said no charge. I said I don't expect not to pay for it but they insisted.

Marks & Spencer, easily remembered Spence ;) is another class outfit which regularly competes with Waitrose on freshness. They have (or did) have a store in Makati as I shopped there once.

Due to the distances involved I imagine the service will be pricier than Shopee or Lasada but will give you access to specialist British & continental produce like cheeses and salami etc that you will never find in the Philippines. Their pre-prepared meals ( I believe our American friends use the term 'TV dinners') are to die for. Reassuringly expensive.

Buy British, French, American, Aussie or Filipino? I live here in the Philippines, still alive with the local availability and a very happy camper. Sure I miss Aussie lamb and beef, the best in the world but the trade off is the seafood here is so cheap as are veggies etc. etc. Thing is why live here if you are not happy with the local choices? My world travels I ate the local foods as I do here. Going to Hong Kong next week and looking forward to the next culinary delights on offer.

Cheers, Steve.

Hope you have a great time in Hong Kong. I was there just under a year ago for a dew days and loved the place, food and people. I stayed Kowloon side and loved walking down by the bay.

Thanks Cherry, just the proverbial visa run but we'll spend a week there looking and traveling around, we have booked a week near walk street and after 3 years since Singapore for the same gig instead of layovers was time to get our hands dirty and see what the fuss is about. I believe the food alone will be worth it, time will tell.

Cheers, Steve.

I took a look. Nearly everything is sold out.

That looks about right, and the prices seem to be high. I suppose transport and taxes does that.

Give me a nice English pork pie when I'm in the UK Maybe some delicious fish and chips. Not going to happen here. I make our fish and chips here, not battered but crumbed and like the chips shallow fried.

When SM opened locally here they had an Aussie Woolworths section and was nice to pick up some old favourites,,,,,,,, sadly after 2/3 months all that disappeared but was nice while it lasted.

Honestly. Wherever I am I eat the local choices and countries matter little, part of venturing around, trying new things no different to living in PH. So many choices.

We used to buy Basmati imported rice online and 3 times the price of local Jasmine rice but we stopped that a couple of years ago with our live in worker,,,,,,, talk about pile your plate up with rice,,,,, now it's the local Jasmine and worries me little.

Cheers, Steve.

I actually had pork pie yesterday here in the UK - I had it cold but prefer it hot with mushy pees and mint sauce. One thing I would miss if living in the Philippines would be raspberries although I know you can buy frozen from Lazada and Shopee and a few other places. But in the UK at this time of year the raspberries the raspberries I purchased last week were imported from Morocco. I used to like taking my daughter with me when she was younger to pick fresh raspberries from the farm nearby to where i live. But like you say there are always alternatives and I could get by the mango with yogurt for breakfast instead of the raspberries.

bigpearl

Not too sure I would have a go at a cold pork pie Cherry but each to their own, and there are plenty of alternatives here in PH. I do miss the gourmet pies available everywhere from seafood mornay, beef, lamb and chicken, curries, potato, cheese and leek and the list goes on, seems I have moved on. Yeah we used to pick wild raspberries and blackberries in the southern states of Oz, same as wild mushrooms. Different here and one adapts to new alternatives.

Cheers, Steve.

Pies . . . .

I like fruit pies Apple, Peach & Pumkin, which are not available at S&R. They do carry Marie Callender's frozen potpies: Turkey, Chicken & Beef, which I have not tried.

Marie Callender has physical stores in the States which sell all kinds of baked goods.

During the holidays I have ordered pies which were very good and $$.

My stepson has baked Apple Pies & Cheese Cakes from scratch for me. His cheese cake pies are far better than anything I have ever purchased in the states.
