Returning to Baguio and Ilocos Sur

mugtech

Even Bard could not answer this.
All 20 years apart? - @Enzyte Bob

No other presidents can claim this, many others were elected 20 years apart.

mugtech

I thought the president elected in 1980 could join the others,  he almost did but did not ultimately qualify..

danfinn

AI can usually answer such riddles.

danfinn

@mugtech

The presidents elected in those years all share a rather eerie connection: they either died in office or were assassinated. Here's a quick rundown:

- **1840**: William Henry Harrison died of pneumonia just a month after taking office.

- **1860**: Abraham Lincoln was assassinated in 1865.

- **1880**: James A. Garfield was assassinated in 1881.

- **1900**: William McKinley was assassinated in 1901.

- **1920**: Warren G. Harding died of a heart attack in 1923.

- **1940**: Franklin D. Roosevelt died of a cerebral hemorrhage in 1945.

- **1960**: John F. Kennedy was assassinated in 1963.

Thanks to co-pilot

Danfinn wins the grand prize, my congrats.  Found out about this when I got home  from attending my first Philadelphia Eagles game at Franklin Field in November of 1963.  It was scary when Reagan got shot, thought he was gonna continue the streak, but he survived and was reelected.  Supposedly Harrison caught the pneumonia on a soggy March 4th swearing in while giving his first speech of over 2 hours, died April 4th.  Swearing in got moved up to January under FDR.

mugtech

The people shower up this morning to install our tv and wifi.  The wifi works fine, but for some reason they did not hook up the satellite portion of the network, got to get some utube.  Something about the payment name not being right, did not use the debit card info for CDO Bank.  They will be back some other time, told them not to come Tuesday, got notice the electricity will be shut down tomorrow from 8 AM until 5PM.  The wife has her follow-up Dr appointment in Vigan on Thursday, but w are planning to go tomorrow while the electric is off, good time to stock up. Did receive 8 cans of beans in latest BB box which we sent back in November.  The beans have 15.5 oz in each can, so I can use a can for 3 days, figure 5oz a day is enough.  when I have my brown rice and beans the wife usually makes one of her stinky fish dishes for herself.  This family is not big on beans.  So I have 8 weeks worth of beans, plus I got two cans of Starkist Tuna much better than the local canned tuna.  Will probably get some salmon and tuna steaks tomorrow also and plenty of broccoli.  Family member gave us three heads of cauliflower, small by US standards but each is good for a couple of meals for both of us. Should be a fun day, gonna check to see if they have any new Vigan tshirts, not even gonna bother with the bookstore.

I've been able to find beans here, I've bought Heinz, Bush's Grillin' Beans & Hunts Pork & Beans.

Have not looked too hard for beans here in Ilocos, will take up the search when back in Baguio.  The beans I bought at Giant in Bethlehem, PA are store brand beans.  They were on sale at 5 cans for $3.  So a 60 cent can of beans lasts me 3 days, so it is 20 cents a day, hard to do better than that.

Our electricity was supposed to go off at 8AM thus morning, they waited until 8:07 to shut down.  In the past they waited until after 9AM to shut down.  So we were off to Vigan at 9:50 AM, did not return until 5:15 PM and the electricity was back.  Went to the Robinsons Supermarket in the downtown mall.  Was surprised that I found veggie burgers there for 105 pesos for 160 grams of veggie burger, actually two 80 gram burgers.  Wife gonna cook them later tonight.  In the USA I pay about $8/pound, much more expensive.  Lucky for me the cruise lines are offering veggie burgers at lunch in the buffet, have to order them, can take 10 minutes.  Don't mind watching the ocean and/ or other cruisers while waiting.  Got some Vigan t-shirts today, the first place had tie dyes for 600 pesos, but two blocks down I got the same shirts, XL size for 220 pesos.  Sounds like I got the white boy surcharge at the first dealer.  Gonna return for wife's doctor appointment, pay the electric bill and the annual real estate taxes on Thursday.  Can't wait.

mugtech

So Thursday was another one of those Welcome To The Philippines days. Wife called Wednesday to get her follow up appointment with the hospital doctor.  She was told her appointment is Thursday from 9AM until noon.  I questioned why a 3 hour follow up, she said it meant she could stop in at any time between 9 and 12, there would be no charge.  Said we would have other things to do, we would get ah early start the next day.  I had heard that before, usually an early v start means ten ish.

At 8:10 AM we drove east up Ramboanga Road towards the sun which was just peaking over the mountains.  Glad I was wearing my prescription shades.  Turned right onto the national highway, went south about a km and then turned right to a viewing.  Most all viewings here take place in the home of the deceased.  The woman had turned 82 on January 6th, died 6 days later.  She was the second cousin of our family members in Hawaii. we stayed about 30 minutes, all the spoken word was Ilocano.  Lot of old superstitions still respected here, tried to incorporate them into Christianity.  When my brother in law died back in 2020 it was required that every night a family member slept in the same room as the coffin to ward off evil spirits.  Viewings can last weeks, often refreshments are served. Originally it was debated that coffins should stay above ground for as long as Jesus had roamed the earth after his resurrection but  before his return to heaven.  It was determined that Jesus had a lot of work to do, notifying all about his resurrection, easing the doubting Thomases, etc.  So it was decided that the common man had no such agenda, could be buried sooner.

Our next stop was another viewing of a man who had turned 24 in December and died on January 8th.  He was an engineer on a cargo ship, came down with pneumonia or something like it and he died.  It was his first month on the ship, no date has been set for his funeral.  His mother was very upset.  Next stop was the tax office in Santa

mugtech

Our rental property on the national highway was built at a cost of $13,000, both years the tax was 60 pesos.  Our 3 bedroom 2 bath house has a veranda and a dirty kitchen outside of our regular kitchen.  Tax is 150 pesos.  Took my wife and her niece who was with her 25 minutes to pay the bills.  Back in the US I walk in with my bill, pay it and they give me a stamped receipt takes a minute.  I asked  my wife what took so long?  She said she had to pay two separate bills.

Headed to Vigan and did some shopping before making it to the doctor's office at 11:30 AM.  5 minute visit was renewed prescriptions including a throat spray ,after 15 minutes at Mercury Drug it was lunch tine.  Stopped at a pure Filipino cafeteria, where pork, beef or fish dish was 75 pesos and veggie sides were 50 pesos, was very crowded.  Saw a nephew who is a sales manager for Pepsi, convinced my fellow travelers to buy a Tropicana orange drink made in the Philippines.  240 mil bottle with 24 grams of sugar.  Told him no salesman in this world could convince me to consume such a product.  Then it was pedicure time for the ladies, more hanging out at Pure Gold for Me.  I had skipped lunch so I bought some bbq French fries for 41 pesos.

We finally got to the tv and wifi company.  We asked them for a print out of our 52 tv channels.  She said there are only 45 channels.  After fooling around for 10 minutes she produced a micro readout, which was too small to read. I handed it back to her and asked which channel was the Philippines NBA channel.  She said the print was too small for her to read.  Then why did she hand it to a 75 year old man wearing glasses?  She told me one of the channels was the Philippines PBA.  Reminded her she told me last week our set up included NBA channel.  I had asked her twice.  They did not even have Philippines NBA as a pay channel.  Went home and watched CNN, only channel worth watching.

You should at least get kdrama in that collection. 😀

I may have said this once before but I cannot figure out how your tax rates are near zero. For example, in Bagiuo your tax rate is high, 2% property plus 1% education fund. My taxes are 2% both here and in Siquijor. Apparently the Phils max allowable property tax rate is held at 2% but SEF of 1% is optional.

So, if your $13K or about 754K php is taxed at Bagiuo's full 3% rate, your tax should be around 22.6K or $450. You may be under-assessed which is nothing to complain about but if your tax is 60 pesos, then the assessed value would be, at the 3% rate, about 2000 pesos or $40. If we assume the 1% rate we are talking an assessed value of 6000 php or about $120.

So, those assessments may have remained the samthsince the Phils was in commonwealth status lol.

I know a few others who pay taxes here and assessments are usually much lower than market value (whatever one thinks that is). I pay rates similar to the other few property-owner expats I know and I suspect condo owners are 2% average as well. How much is a condo in Manila? 10M? That should be about 200K in taxes. I am quite sure nobody gets charged that much; I'll guess that they will be assessed such that they pay between 20K and 50K php per year max. My taxes on both properties are in the double digit thousands of pesos and our assessments are comfortably lower than what I think market is.

You have a very friendly tax assessor lol.

Just found out our Filipina friend and her white husband will be coming to Vigan tomorrow to look for rental properties.  She currently owns rental properties in Baguio and is a licensed real estate agent back in PA, where we met them.  She is 70 years old and still quite active.  Her husband is a few fears younger than her, getting ready to start collecting Social Security benefits.

They usually come to the Philippines after Christmas and stay for 2 or 3 months.  She became a US citizen some years ago, but when she went to the Philippines consulate in NYC she was denied duel citizenship.  They said her Filipino birth certificate was not an original.  Yet she came to the US on her Philippines passport and later became a US citizen and then obtained a US passport.  The problem is her husband cannot get balikbayan status and stay for a year.  So last year after 29 days they flew to Hong Kong and then back a few days later, stayed for another 29 days then flew home.  Told then about buying throw away tickets and then extending the tourist visas until they fly home again.  The woman claims she was born in a rice field 70 years ago, never got an official birth certificate.  Interested to see them, see what their plans are this year.  In the auto business he claims electric cars are the future, but he does not have one.

mugtech

Woke up at 5AM and noticed the electricity was off.  The Santa winds were strong last night, guess that was the cause.  Went back to sleep.  Electricity kicked in for our neighbors about 8:30 AM, but ours was not on until 11AM.   Found out that PA friends not arriving until Sunday, so another hanging out day.

Played some Hearts on Playok, I used my Harry Truman player.  Had a UK person throw the game to another player.  When asked why he played so stupidly he said to make sure Truman did not win.  I only had a run in like that once before when I was using JFKblownaway.  A player told me that was a disrespectful name.  Told him I didn't start the fire, he should take it up with Billy Joel.

mugtech

Yesterday was our next venture into Vigan to meet our friends from PA.  Wife said she saw something online which states our electricity would be off from 8AM until 5PM on February 2. Wife said we needed an early start, actually got in the van at 8:05, electricity still functioning.  There was a parade in Vigan which started at 8 AM, increasing the difficulty of finding their hotel.  It was the usual failed GPS, plus asking people on the streets, plus driving in circles (actually more like rectangles).  Found the hotel by 9:30, they were eating breakfast so we went to watch the parade.  Only parking space we would find was on the third level of the central mall  parking garage.  It was a great parade watching site, as the parade was going by near our open view.  At 10:30 we went to Mass, with the church being right on the parade route.

We were in church by 10:45 for the 11AM English Mass, parade ended sometime before the Mass ended at 11:45.  So it was time for lunch.  But our PA friends were not hungry yet, so we sat at their hotel and talked for a while.  They are Jehovah's Witnesses, and I can say I do like their idea of never celebrating birthdays.  So we decided to pick up some Chow King and then headed back to Manueva to see our niece retired from Hong Kong who was selling land for 6 million pesos.  The niece had not yet returned from her typical all day Sunday born again Christian get togethet, but our friends got to see the land and buildings involved, niece showing up about 4:30.  It was decided we would return to Vigan and have dinner at our favorite buffet.

At my request we had wasabi for our sushi and everyone pigged out.  At 7PM we dropped everyone else at the town square to get seats for the fountain, lights and music show.  PA folks had never seen it.  I stayed with the van driver in a futile effort to find a parking space.  The show starts at 7:30, so we just cruised Vigan, reminds me of the 60's cruising Penn Street in Reading, PA.  Cruising and playing the radio, no particular place to go. Actually saw a van pull out and grabbed the place right across from Greenwich Pizza at 7:50. The show is only 30 minutes, and by 8:10 we were dropping the PA folks off at their hotel.

When we got home I found out Punxsutawney Phil has seen his shadow, predicting 6 more weeks of winter.  Found out the electricity did not go off that day. The notice my wife saw was from 2022.

Jackson4

I am not sure what Punxsutawney Phil saw but my joints say 6 more months of winter.

Looked like Sunday was gonna be our last day in Ilocos Sur for a while, so we went to Vigan for 11 AM Mass then met family members at my wife's favorite buffet.  Was 7 adults and 3 kids, had no reservations so stuck outside with no fans.  Then we headed to the church again, a good spot to drag plastic chairs out of the church and sit along the street for a parade glorifying Ilocos Sur.

The parade was supposed to start at 2PM, but we were there at 2:20 and all we heard was a song praising Ilocos Sur.  When it started the instrumental sounded like "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet"  which was true at the time.  But they played the same song over and over again until 3:30, the end of the parade.  It was a recent tune praising the unity of Ilocos Sur, saying, "one voice, one sound, one Ilocos Sur."  The visual was a hand with the index finger pointed skyward..  There were 12 groups from Ilocos carrying signs such as Vigan, Narvacan, Santa Maria.  They would stop every few blocks and dance in their historic costumes.

After the parade we searched for a fire extinguisher, for after being in business for over two years the locals inspected our rental property and declared we needed one.  Also stopped along the highway to purchase some produce.  Got 4 heads of cauliflower and 2 heads of cabbage for 160 pesos.  One head of cauliflower would have been about 160 pesos back in PA, would have been twice the size of the ones we got, but we liked our produce here.

Got up Monday morning and followed the Super Bowl on CBS Sports, play by play print out.  The three times I watched the Eagles in the super bowl on tv they lost, but the two times I have watched  them on CBS Sports in the Philippines they won.  Had to figure the numbers favored the Eagles, since two players were playing on their birthdays, and the players wore numbers 26 and 33 and the sum of the two is 59.  This was Super Bowl number 59.  We finally left for Baguio at 1:10 PM.

In honor of President*s Day USA, Feb 17, 2025 have a trivia question:

What do Ben Harrison and Joe Biden have in common?  This is something which cannot be claimed by any other US president..

Both defeated by former one term presidents when attempting to be relected

Went to St Louis  University private hospital on Monday for the wife.  Last year we went to the public hospital, was cheap but to ok all day.  Thus time we arrived bat 12:20 PM, went to outpatient care and saw a closed until 1PM sign.  Wife was actually called to the desk at 12:56 PM.  Saw a doctor for 20 minutes and got a TB test and given 3 prescriptions for her continued cough.  For some reason she was only charged 50 pesos for the visit and the TB test (was negative).  We went to the Mercury Drug on Upper Sessions Road and filled the 3 prescriptions for 1,700 pesos, will have a return visit to the doctor next Monday.

The annual flower show is still going full blast until March third, Upper Sessions Road I'd closed, full of all kinds of vendors.  At the top right before the steps up to the mall there is a stage set up for local performers.  We got to see the last two acts of the day, some areal stuff and then young girls dancing v to hip-hop music.  The areal performers were a safe, uninspiring version of what we see on cruise ships.  The young hip-hop dancers were amusing, do not need to see that again.  We had free parking at the hospital, staying home today as our licence number does not allow us to park in Baguio on Tuesdays.  I did grab a mango shake in Burnham park while waiting for the attempted drug purchase earlier.  Was a refreshing 22oz drink for 85 pesos with a heavy duty plastic straw able to suck in chunks of mango.

My wife was admitted to St. Lukes for the fourth time and the bill was P500,000.

In additional to this she had to go on dialysis    three times a week for two weeks, costing P7,000 for each session. (P21,000 for each week.) All four times she was hospitalized I spent $36,000 USD.

DON'T THINK TWICE ITS ALRIGHT was the Bob Dylan theme song for yesterday.  Wife went back

to hospital for her one week check up.  I heard the previous Monday that she was to see the doctor between 1 and 2 PM this Monday.  That part was in English, most everything else was in Ilocano, as the doctor is from Ilocos Sur.  So we arrived at 12:50 after a 190 peso cab ride from a block from our house to the hospita!.  It is 3 mikes from our house to Baguio city limits. The hospital is near the Cathedral about 5 blocks from the main street, Sessions Road.

Got signed in and sat there until 1:50 PM, when wife asked what up.  Was told she was instructed to check in between 1 and 2 and the doctor would see patients starting at 2:30 PM.  News to us.  At 2:05 PM  a nurse pulled us into a room and went over everything about the previous visit plus a review once again of all the vaccines she had or had not had.  12 Minutes later were were out in the lobby again, waiting.  At 2:35 PM we were called in to see the doctor.  The first 10 minutes was a reason eat of the discussion we just had with the nurse.  After another 10 minutes it was decided that all was well, no need to do anything else.

We walked over to PLDT on Sessions to pay our March tv and wifi bill.  We had tried to pay the previous week but were told we could not pay our March bill in February.  Only took 10 minutes this time, last week it took 20 minutes to tell us we used nothing yet.  Then we went to the mall and spent 90 minutes grocery shopping after eating at a Japanese restaurant, got in the priority cab line and arrived home at 7:40 PM

mugtech

I ain't saying you treated me unkind

You could have done better, but I don't mind

You just kinda wasted my precious time

But don't think twice, its alright.

And what about the "motorcycle song" mugtech? I was only 8 when it was released but as a teen on fell in love with Arlo Guthrie, even some of his dads stuff, of course Pete Seeger as well as your legend Dylan. Funny how things change "but don't think twice it's alright".

I had a laugh yesterday mentioning to Ben that Dolly Parton's husband passed away after near 60 years together,,,,,, he asked who is Dolly Parton? I started singing many of her songs and it wasn't until I got to Jolene that he said "oh her" my dad used to sing that in karaoke, his dad is 70 and a lot more worldly it seems as Ben had never heard of Bob Dylan or Pink Floyd until we met but loves NIN and other heavy metal I have introduced over our many years but returns to Tagalog love songs in the end.

Just thought I'd add to your return to Baguio.

Cheers, Steve.

One that stuck in my head for 50 years was down by the seaside, Led Zeplin and whether the tremolo guitar or the Dylan and Niel Young influences was a classic and when getting Tori Amos in for a duet in 95 was a clincher. Led Zeplin though an old band are legends.

Coincidentally I have just been checking my UK TV guide for the coming weekend. The BBC arts channel BBC2 has a Bob Dylan special dedicated to the musician on Saturday 8 March from 9pm-3.30am  (5am March 9th Filipino time). Starts with a Martin Scorsese profile featuring rare interviews and archive footage beginning with Dylan's formative years with contributions from friends and teachers and explores his early arrival in 60's New York. Followed by his various songs.

It's a 6 hour (commercial free) extravaganza. Yup 'Auntie' has pulled all the stops out on this one.

If you are using a VPN (eg NordVPN) you can access BBC content live or via the BBC iplayer.

Failing that I can record the programme on my Panasonic DVD recorder and post the disc to your Pennsylvania or Baguio address if you refund me the air freight!

mugtech

Thanks for the offer, do not have a DVD player. My PLDT tv program does have BBC, I will check it out.  Gonna have to actually go to a movie theatre to watch Like a Complete Unknown.

Just about out of paperbacks.  Reading Brad Thor's Spymaster written in 2016.  The story concerns Russia doing all kinds of terror attacks across Europe to divide NATO and prepare Russia for the invasion of the Baltic states, as the goal is to Reconstitute the USSR.  In this story there is no Putin asskisser in the White House.  One of the objectives is an island of Sweden which helps control the Baltic Sea.  Sweden has over 267,000 islands, leads the world. Many are not inhabited.  I will not give away any more plot.  But it does remind me of GB Shaw's comment about his The Devil's Disciple.  "The book is fiction, you can believe every word.". Not a bad movie with Lancaster and  Douglass taking place right before the battle of Saratoga during the US revolution.

It's interesting mugtech, don't remember reading a book now for 20 years and was an avid reader until my ex wife and I split and divorced, got rid of a dozen boxes of books to different charities but still managed to send 5 boxes here to PH and they are still boxed up, some read 30/40 years ago and thought "I'll keep that one and that one and 5 boxes later with the thought to reread" never touched, life seems to have changed I suppose for me. Glad to hear you enjoy your novels.

Cheers, Steve.

Enzyte Bob

I used to be an avid read while living in Las Vegas, until my cataracts got the best of me. They were so bad I couldn't read street signs.

I had purchase many books from The Las Vegas Advisor. They published many books and often they would go on sale.

My favorite was by Oscar Goodman who called himself the Happiest Mayor in the country.

He was very successful lawyer defending the mob bosses. His book was a fantastic read.

I resembled him and vacationers didn't know he was. Often to these unknowedgeable vacationers I would introduce myself as Oscar Goodman without mentioning the mayor part.

I'm sure later they put two and two together and claimed they played blackjack and had drinks with the mayor.

Once I got to the Philippines the first thing I did was get cataract surgery. After seven years I still have 20/15 eyesight.

bigpearl

Yes Bob eyes are interesting things and while I have no trouble reading a book or signs 40 feet away noticed that anything further was becoming hard to read so went and got glasses, that was 25 years ago and I'm still on the same prescription apparently. Ben got glasses 12 years ago and seems they are the same as mine as we can use each others spare eyes. Thing is it does make driving easier but the biggest difference are the boats on the water 2/300M away and the container ships or tankers on the horizon, without the glasses I can't tell the difference. Glad to hear your cataract surgery worked.

Cheers, Steve.

I have read the first 370 pages of a thousand page biography on Harry S Truman, FDR just died and now Harry is in charge, put it down to read some fiction.  I currently using the book as a coaster for my drinks as I relax in our living room.  I am currently playing the card game hearts at Playok on line.  I use the names of past US presidents as my competitors.  Yesterday used FDR, today I won one out of three games with Harrytruman.  As I was pausing for a sip of coffee I heard CNN reporting about the US attacks into Yemen.  They said the Houthis attacked a US aircraft carrier but caused no damage.  The name of the carrier is the Harry S Truman.

Tomorrow I will be playing with Ilikeike and the next day it will be Jfkblownaway.  The JFK guy is the only character which inspired other players to complain.  I was told it is an insult to the whole Kennedy family.  Told them I didn't start the fire, they should take their complaints to Billy Joel.  Cannot wait to hear about the new info about JFK gonna be released later today.
