Suggestions for medical insurance

I plan to visit China as a tourist in the near future and I would like to purchase medical insurance while there.  Any suggestions and thank you.

Although Medical insurance isn’t required for a standard tourist (L) visa to China, but it’s highly recommended.

Foreigners usually can’t use the public healthcare system, most hospitals want full payment upfront (sometimes with a big deposit), and costs — especially at international clinics or for serious issues — can get expensive fast.

Good coverage for emergencies, hospitalization, and especially medical evacuation is the smart move.

Since you want to buy it while already in China, here are the most practical options for tourists:

  1. Trip.com (super easy for foreigners): Their app and website are in English, tourist-friendly, and you can grab short-term travel/medical insurance standalone (or when booking anything). Local support and claims are usually straightforward.
  2. Ping An Insurance: One of the biggest and most reliable Chinese insurers. They offer short-term policies for foreigners (just need your passport). You can often find them through travel agencies, airport counters, or popular comparison platforms on WeChat.
  3. Alipay / WeChat Pay insurance sections: Once you’ve linked your foreign card and verified with your passport, you can search for short-term medical/travel insurance directly in the apps. Many options are available and can start the same day.

Quick tips when buying locally:

  1. Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay early — you’ll need them for almost everything anyway.
  2. Use translation apps if the interface is in Chinese.
  3. Aim for at least $100k–500k+ in medical coverage + emergency evacuation.
  4. Keep every receipt and doctor report for claims.

A lot of people still prefer buying comprehensive travel insurance before arriving like Seven Corners, Allianz, AXA, etc.) because the assistance networks are often stronger, but if you want to do it on the ground, the options above work well.

Check that any policy covers high medical expenses, evacuation, and has a 24/7 hotline. Prices are usually pretty reasonable for short trips.

Safe travels and enjoy China! Let me know if you have other questions. 👍
