Planning to Return to China After Retirement – Looking to Connect

catherineqjin

Hi, I’m a U.S. citizen who grew up in China. I plan to return after retirement and would love to connect with others who share a similar background or are interested in long-term life in China.

Thanks,

Catherine

Hi Catherine, to the best of my belief, if not travelling on a Chinese passport, you will either need a job in China (not over 60 years old unless a foreign expert at professor level) or be visiting family. For long term residence you would probably need to be married to a Chinese national or be supporting a Chinese family member in China. If your application falls into a grey area of the qualification requirements listed on the internet then the best advice is to go to China for a holiday and visit the Public Security Bureau (PSB) in the city of your choice to see on what basis they would consider you for a residence permit. On arriving in China you need to apply for a residence permit within 30 days. Any application should include a full health certificate obtained from a Chinese health centre dedicated for that purpose - ordinary hospitals do not qualify albeit that after the suit of examinations you need to wait a few days to get the certificate.
