Weather in Snooky

james1963

Hey Joe,

You live in SHV, can you tell me about the weather there in the rainy season? Last time I was in Cambodia I skipped the coastal area because I thought it would be rainy saison and rainy season stroke me in coastal area's as less nice than in area's with land climate.
I know that in lots of places rainy season isn't to bad. I visited SE asia in may and june several times and apart from the occational heave shower, we have always been ok.
I also was a little afraid that the costal area could be a little dead in the rainy season.

How is it like from Mai till November in SHV? I know I should be coming, but because of my project I must first go to SR for some time. And by visiting 1 week, I don't know the weather during 6 months :unsure

Hi James.

Rainy season is what it says: rain, rain, rain.
Of course big differences between the midlands and the coast/highlands.
It's like annual 1400 mm in the midlands to 4000 mm in the highlands and the coast.

September and October are the worst in SHV, with nearly every day rain. Although on some days it might be a heavy shower or two of one hour each, there are also days of 8 hours pouring rain.
It is part of being in a tropical country, 6 months dry and 6 months wet.

For what to do in that time that is up to you and personal. I work a lot on my computer, doing photo editing of photos I took earlier [I'm a nature photographer hobbyist], I go out at night when I want, sometimes take a tuktuk instead of my motorbike, but I go out when I want.
Rainy season is a fact and you have to adapt to the circumstances. No problem for me.

Good thing is in SHV is no flooding except some roads after heavy rain but that settles in one hour. SHV is on a hill so all rainwater flows to the sea. Other areas of Cambodia have annual flooding and as this statement says quite some in Siem reap too:
"Ongoing raining causes flooding throughout most parts of Cambodia, especially Siem Reap Province".

It's a matter of adapting situations James, be positive and keep smiling.

Joe
