Marcel67

My father was born in Mauritius and immigrated to South Africa.
I would like to apply for ancestral citizenship. Can somebody please help with what l need to do?

I am a teacher in South Africa and would love to teach in Mauritius. I have 33 years experience teaching Grade 6 and 7 learners ( average 11 to 13 years old) and my main subjects are English and Mathematics.

Could someone please help and advise to what l should do?

Hi Marcel,

Welcome on board  :)

If your father is a Mauritian or has had the mauritian citizenship, here is an informative thread on the topic :  https://www.expat.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=794281

There are 2 cases explained in the thread, #1 where the father had lost his mauritian citizenship and had to retrieve it first and the second case is quite straightforward post #6.

In any case, get in touch with the competent authorities for updated infos : https://dha.govmu.org/Pages/Services/Citizenship.aspx

All the best,
Anouhska

Q1: about citizenship

This has been answered so many times on this forum - a search about " citizenship" or naturalization" will come in handy.

From the government site:

https://dha.govmu.org/Pages/Services/Citizenship.aspx

PERSONS QUALIFIED AS MAURITIAN CITIZENS
A person becomes a citizen of Mauritius either by birth or by descent
BY BIRTH:
(i) A person is a citizen of Mauritius, if he is born in Mauritius before 1st October 1995, of either Mauritian or foreign parents
(ii) A person is a citizen of Mauritius if he is born in Mauritius after 1st October 1995 and if either of his parents is a citizen of Mauritius.

BY DESCENT
A person born outside Mauritius is a citizen of Mauritius under section 20(3) and 23 of the Constitution if either of his parents is a citizen of Mauritius by birth.

Please take note of this :

Resumption of Mauritian citizenship for persons who are not ordinarily resident in Mauritius.
Under section 15(2) of the Mauritius Citizenship Act, a person who
(i)    was a citizen of Mauritius and also a national of a foreign country;
(ii)    attained the age of 21 on or after 12th March 1968 and before 1st October 1995;and
(iii)   ceased to be a citizen of Mauritius, for failing to renounce the nationality or citizenship of that foreign country, under the previous section 15* of the Mauritius Citizenship Act, may, if he is not ordinarily resident in Mauritius, apply for the resumption of his Mauritian citizenship.

Thus you will have to prove that your father is still a Mauritian citizen as one of the documents to be produced would be his Mauritian citizenship card . Hence  he should apply for his card before you can apply to be a citizen by descent.  In addition, You will need the following  for your own application:
