Inheritance law in Mauritius

Rosie2018

Hi all
I am seeking advice on behalf of my mum who lives in Mauritius. She is basically one of the remaining children since both of my grandparents passed away intestate a long time ago. There are property and lands. My uncle sold one property already and cashed the money. My aunt has been living in the other property, extending and renovating. I was wondering if anyone knows of a time deadline to complete the division of assets or if my aunt can transfer the deeds to her name after living there a certain time. I would also be grateful if anyone can recommend a good notary who can sort this out fast. Thank you. R

Hello Rosie,
Not always easy if you have been living in England for a long while to get an idea of the legislations on inheritance and so on in Mauritius. However, nowadays, the government is placing quite a lot of information online. I guess you need to do an online search.
Recently, with my dealings with property, I used this notary:
Me. M. L. Linley .Antonio,1er Etage - Immeuble, ARC, Angles des Rues, Sir Williams Newton & S.S.R, Port Louis. Mauritius. Try this link but the address is provided by a third party. https://www.brabys.com/business/6007097 … -linley-me
You could ask them to produce your legal documents in English. However, if you go in person at the notary, you need to be conversant in French as the details are verbally provided in French by the solicitor.
There are many notaries but finding a good one is not straightforward.
Hope the above details are helpful. If you need further help, let me know. I can ask my relatives to find out more.
