Why is Google Maps so lost in Mauritius ?

It has happened with me quite a few times - the latest being today. I asked Google Maps to get me directions from Quatre Bornes Metro station to Tribeca mall. It gave me driving instructions alright but the only other option was walking ! Even when I specifically asked for public transport it continued showing me walking instructions only. Even these walking instructions were along the fast highways and I do not know whether there even exists a pedestrian walkway at all.

This is so much the opposite of other countries where Google Maps may show dirt tracks as motorable roads.

There are virtually no Street Views available for Quatre Bornes either.

Has Google mapped only the touristy locations on the island and left the locals to live in the pre-Maps era ?

Hi,

Google Maps isn't always reliable when it comes to public transport in Mauritius, particularly for bus routes. It applies for places of interest as well. It's important to bear in mind that not every country has the same level of digital mapping or public transport integration.

When it comes to bus/public transport in Mauritius, better ask locals or the "chef de gare" i.e station master at the bus terminal. You will find one in any bus station/terminal including Quatre-Bornes central.

You may also check bus routes online :

Specifically, to get from Quatre Bornes to Tribeca by bus, take the Express Port Louis bus (blue bus) along St Jean Road (at any bus stop). As a precaution, it's always best to check with the bus conductor before boarding.

Thank you. I did stumble and tumble through the day and found partial relief when I reached mauritius-buses and buscnt.

Google maps is an amazing app for information,  but it's rubbish for navigation.

It used to be top of the tree, but Google introduced AI and improved it to useless, so I switched to Waze.
