Yes.

I've lived here for 2yrs. I know of a couple of incidents but that's par for the course anywhere.

Having said that, you take the right precautions....

Yes.  But I would make sure the villa or place I got has bars on the windows, etc.

it's like cayyolu, eskisehir yolu in ankara, perfectly safe, keep the wall, bars, locks proper anyway.

It's an area of dead people!!!

So happy that u and all ur family are safe and sound, it is a an ordeal.

The best thing u do is to report it to ur embassy and the police. believe me police stations, should do something if anyone report a crime, and police are required to take immediate action when something touches or has something to do with people from out side the country.

I think u should have alarm system and CCTV in place.

Hi all. Thanks for all the useful information I'm finding in this forum.
I'll be moving to libya yn february as a diplomat.
One of our main concerns is safety, and after viewing this thread i'm wondering about the wisdom of picking a villa in janzour.
I'm now living in Honduras (pretty unsafe place) and we're provided with 24h guards in our residences. Are private security companies available in libya? What about monitored alarm systems? Are these security options available in Tripoli?

Thanks everybody.

sorry to hear about the incident...but everyone knows by now to stay away from black africans in libya; whether they are muslim or not makes no difference, and yes they due lie about their religious creed inorder to get a job.  they only want to make enough money in any way possible inorder to catch a boat to italy, illegaly.  in general they are desperate people who resort to desperate measures.  one quarter lose their life in the second part of the trip across the sea, another quarter loses it in the first half crossing the desert...only to get to italy and find out that no one will ever give them a job, ever...so they end up in criminal activities, which is no news to them.
moving to a smaller place would be wiser, the apartment buildings across from Dat el Imad are new and very big in a very safe part of town, i wouldn't suggest foreigners to live in isolated villas in the outskirts, since they are an easy target.
plus you can always use cameras and motion-detector lights which are always an effective measure against thieves and the like.

The point is if you're going to hire a guard(ener) do it through your employer.
