Malaria on the Coast ?

Hi

I’ve been to Nairobi twice, and I’d now like to visit the coast, either Mombasa or Diani Beach. The tropical medicine centre in my country advised me to take antimalarial medication as a preventive measure.

I have a question: do expats who live there all year round take antimalarial medication for the rest of their lives ?

No, expatriates who live year-round in malaria-endemic areas like Mombasa or Diani Beach generally do not take antimalarial medication for the rest of their lives.

While short-term travelers are strongly advised to take preventive medication (chemoprophylaxis) for the duration of their trip, long-term residents shift their strategy toward sustainable, permanent prevention and rapid management.

Continuous, lifelong use of antimalarial drugs can cause chronic side effects, strain organ functions (like the liver or stomach), and cause psychological disturbances depending on the specific drug.

Unlike a tourist returning home to a country where malaria is unfamiliar to local doctors, residents have immediate access to specialized local clinics. Private hospitals on the Kenyan coast can diagnose malaria via a finger-prick blood test in minutes.
