$aving on Air Travel

cccmedia

In today’s Sunday New York Times Travel section, there’s an article listing tips for saving on domestic and overseas air travel*.

1.  Plan travel for Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday.  40 percent savings is possible compared to the most expensive air-travel days -- Monday, Friday and Sunday.

2.  Book your seat(s) about three months in advance, or five months in advance for holiday periods.

3.  About 3 p.m. Tuesday is the best time to find the most discounted seats.  That’s because Tuesday is the day when the airlines are prone to discount their fares.  Many discounted seats are distributed that day to Internet travel sites.

4.  Airlines typically charge the same fare to each passenger flying in a group.  In some cases, this means that a higher fare is charged to some flyers in the group than would be charged if booking individually.  Tip:  before buying, price the fare based on individuals in the group to see if booking each fare separately would produce savings for the group overall.

Considering it's the NY Times, I'll bet on Eastern Standard Time in the US

I’d make that same assumption.  The article didn’t specify.

An airline based in, say, Istanbul may or may not discount its seats on Tuesday afternoon.
