This week saw significant developments in Mauritius, including the adoption of the Finance Bill in the National Assembly, the release of new statistics on gender inequality, and the successful second edition of the C Kite Festival.

Finance Bill adopted

The approval of the Finance Bill was a crucial milestone as it grants legal validity to a series of measures outlined in the 2023-2024 budget. Finance Minister Renganaden Padayachy emphasized that the government's vision is centered on an economically, socially, and environmentally pragmatic and solidarity-driven project.

New Gender Equality figures

On Thursday, Statistics Mauritius published figures for the year 2022, revealing that despite considerable progress towards gender equality, disparities persist in the country. The report indicated that only 10.4% of working women held positions as entrepreneurs, compared to 28.3% of men. Additionally, women remain significantly underrepresented in decision-making roles at the highest levels of society, with only 3 female ministers among the total of 21.

In the realm of high-level sports, the participation of women lagged behind men, accounting for just 35.3% compared to 64.7% for men. Furthermore, the report highlighted that 82.1% of domestic violence victims were women, while 17.9% were men. These figures underscore the ongoing challenges in achieving gender equality in Mauritius, despite notable advancements.

The C Kite Festival took place last weekend

The second edition of the C Kite Festival took place from July 14th to 16th, featuring the presence of Antoine Auriol, the 2010 world kitesurfing champion. Over the course of two days, this event at C Mauritius brought together a remarkable assembly of local talent and renowned professionals, including Youri Zoon, Paul Serin, Hay Katz, Tom Hébert, and Arthur Guillebert, who contributed their expertise to the festival's success. The weekend concluded with an exhilarating beach party featuring DJ Up Down, followed by an entertaining concert.
