Visa applications are usually the most dreaded step for to-be expats. We have noticed, at Fab French Insurance, that the most common cause for unsuccessful applications in France is inappropriate insurance coverage. So here are a few tips to keep in mind to stack the odds in your favor when applying for a long-term visa in France.

To get your VLS-TS in France (Visa Long Séjour – valant Titre de Séjour) you'll need private health insurance (PHI). After years of experience as insurance brokers and hundreds of Visa applications, we've come to the conclusion that the layout of the insurance certificate is the critical factor that will determine the fate of your application.

Here are some common mistakes that applicants make and how to make sure your insurance is bulletproof for the application:

  • The insurance certificate should show cover for at least the duration of your visa. If this is not possible and your insurance is unable to cover you for the whole duration, the certificate should mention that the policy is scheduled for automatic renewal.

  • You should get an insurance that covers hospitalisations and any other outpatient medical expenses you could need during your stay in France. The certificate should mention that the insurance covers hospitalisations and any other medical expenses. Make sure that coverage details are mentioned on the certificate.

  • Your medical insurance cover should be at least 30.000€.

  • The insurance certificate should not display any medical exclusions or interventions that are not included on the coverage plan.

  • The insurance certificate should mention that you are covered for public liability in the EU and that your policy also comes with a repatriation plan.

What are the official guidelines for a long-term visa in France?

The visa application process can be done online although you will need to set an appointment with the nearest visa center at some point. For all long-stay visas, you will be required to be the holder of a passport issued at least 10 years prior to your application and valid for at least three months after the planned date of departure from the French territory, you will also need the application form which you can fill online as well as three standardized passport photos. Outside of the scope of insurance and other across the board boxes to check, the different visas you can apply for and the other requirements can depend on your nationality and passport. There is a lot of information online but make sure you use a reliable service.

In regard to the insurance requirements, we believe Brexit took a toll and made a mess of the whole application process. It has had an impact on citizens from all countries; for example, the application rules have even tightened for US citizens.

If you fulfill the five requirements listed in the previous section and if the rest of your file is complete, you should be off to a flying start with your visa application.
