With beaches closed, you might be wondering how to keep busy and keep exploring the island during your weekends. How about seeing the island from above? We're talking… hiking! Here are Mauritius' most iconic mountains.

Le Pouce

Le Pouce mountain is the third highest mountain in Mauritius. It stands at 812m. It is suitable for all levels of hikers. There are two starting points, one in Moka and one in Port-Louis. It takes an hour and a half to reach the top on average. Le Pouce will give you an incredible view of the capital, Port-Louis and of the other mountains in the Moka Range as well as on the East coast of the island. The hike is also suitable for children.

Le Morne

Le Morne, found in Le Morne village, is one of the most iconic hikes in Mauritius. The mountain is known for its incredible view of the turquoise waters of the South Western coast but most importantly, has played an important role in marronage during slavery in Mauritius. Runaway enslaved people hid there and some committed suicide by throwing off the mountain. Although there are plateaus on the mountain from where you can get a nice view, the whole hike is only suitable for habitual hikers in good physical shape.

Piton de la Petite Rivière Noire

Standing at 828m, Piton de la Petite Rivière Noire is the highest peak in Mauritius. It offers an incredible view on the South West coast and you can also see the Moka range from there. If you want a good workout, you can begin your hike in the Black River National park but a lighter hike would begin on the Central Plateau in Plaines-Champagnes. The hike is suitable for all levels of hikers.

Signal Mountain

Ok so this one is cheating a little bit but it's still a great workout and a beautiful view, especially at night! Signal mountain is found in Port-Louis and there is a road to take you up the mountain so it is not really a hike. However, it means it is suitable for all levels and ages and you can even take your baby in a pram to the top!

Lion Mountain

Lion Mountain is found in the South East and gives an amazing view of the South Eastern coast of the island. The hike begins in Grand-Port or in Bois des Amourettes and it takes around two hours to get to the top. Although it can be tricky at times, it is a hike accessible to all and it gifts hikers with truly spectacular views.
