The holiday season in Germany

Hello everyone,

Are you about to celebrate the holiday season in Germany? In many countries and cultures, the festive season is the time for happiness and reunions/gatherings. Is it so in Germany? How do Germans celebrate this very special time of the year?

What about you? Will you spend the holiday season in your host country or in your home country? Will there be expat reunions/celebrations/parties in your region/town/area?

Thank you in advance for sharing!

Priscilla

Christmas in Germany is generally a family affair - time to visit parents or other relatives, exchange presents under the Christmas tree and eat (too much) special Christmas food.
There are no parties or other public, loud events. Such things are not appropriate for the German Christmas atmosphere. Even the famous (and very worth visiting) Christmas markets close a few days before the actual event.
The quiet time ends on 31. Dec. ("Sylvester"), when everyone gathers at noisy parties, gets drunk and welcomes the New Year with lots of fireworks.
I wish you all a happy festive season!
