Hey everyone,

Pets are an integral part of a lot of families. So much so that they would never consider moving abroad without them. Before doing so, it would be important to know the pet culture in Ecuador just to make sure that their little “expets” feel welcomed in their new homes. Would you give our expats-to-be an insight of what it is like to have a pet in Ecuador by answering the following questions?

What part do pets play in society in Ecuador? Are they generally accepted in rentals and public spaces more generally?

Is it common for families to have pets?

What animal is the most often kept as pets? Are there some animals that cannot be kept as pets? Do some animals have specific significations when kept as pets?

How about the infrastructure needed to cater for pets? Can you find everything you need for your pet in terms of pet food, veterinary services, accessories, pet grooming etc...?

Do people generally spend a lot of money on their pets?

Please share your experience,

Priscilla

In many newer buildings in Quito, it is becoming increasingly difficult to find rental apartments that allow pets (dogs). Many rental advertisements will explicitly state pets are not allowed. As for public spaces, pets are free to roam. Carolina park even has a dog park for dogs to play and owners to socialize.

Is it common for families to have pets?

Yes, especially families that rent or own houses.

Dogs are all over the place, in homes and on the streets. Cats are mostly confined to homes in the capital, and rarely are they seen on the streets of Centro-North area. It’s pretty much a doggy world on the streets.

How about the infrastructure needed to cater for pets? Can you find everything you need for your pet in terms of pet food, veterinary services, accessories, pet grooming etc...?

Pet food is relatively limited. The most popular for dogs is the local Pro-Can or the imported Dog Chow. But everything else is mostly available. There are many pet grooming services, a typical dog grooming is about $25. Veterinary services are offered all over the city. A word of advice is that costs will be much cheaper outside of centro-north area.

Do people generally spend a lot of money on their pets?

Between food, veterinary costs, grooming and toys, pets costs can add-up.
