Priscilla,

I am living on the NE coast of Brazil in Praia de Pipa, a tourist area so the costs may seem a little higher compared to some other places.  Using R$3.11 to the US Dollar.

> How much does it cost to rent an apartment/house in Brazil?   I bought mine in 2008 when the dollar was $1.00: R$1.35.  Given what has happened you can see that I will not be able to get my money from this house for some time to come.

> How much do you pay for your public transport tickets (bus, subway, train, tram)?  I purchased a Honda Fit.  Saw this exact model with more options in Dallas, TX, USA and my wife loved it.  Bought the exact same model with much fewer options in Natal.  In Texas:  $18,500  usd.  Same car with less options in Natal:  $17,268 USD or R$67,000.

> Staple food: what do people eat and how much do they pay for basic food like bread, rice or pasta?

>What is your monthly grocery budget?  $386.00 USD or R$1,200.00 per month (buy in Natal as apposed to Pipa with tourist prices)

> How much does it cost to see a physician/doctor/specialist in Brazil ?   I have Amil medical insurance.  For both my wife and myself the cost is $1,400.00 USD or R$4,400.00 per month.  We have been to see our doctor for physicals, dermatologist, eye doctor and have paid no out of pocket expenses.

> What is your children's schooling monthly budget?   No children

> How much does it cost to fill up your car's fuel tank? $48.00 USD or R$150.00

> How much do you pay for electricity/gas/water etc.?  Electricity:  $119.00 USD or R$370 per month.  Water is included in condo fees.  Gas:  The knee high size bottle the cost is $16.00 or R$50.00 every 4 to 5 months (with gas bottle trade in).

> How much do you pay for your Internet/phone subscription?  $39.00 USD or R$120 per month for 15 - 30 mb download. This is also fiber optics.  Cell phone is Claro at $18.97 USD or R$59.00 per month for 1 cell line.

> How much do you pay for your lunch pack on weekdays?  Built into grocery bill

> How much do you pay for an espresso coffee?  Built into grocery bill

> How much do you pay for a cinema ticket?  Went in Natal for new movie release at $1.93 USD or R$6.00 for both myself and wife (over 60 years of age)

> How much does a gym membership cost in Brazil?  $41.80 USD or R$130.00 per month for 2 people.

The cost of living in Brazil depends on where you want to live and how you want to live.  It will also depend on the landlord.owner of the property. You can rent a room, a house, an apt. or live in a republica. Your landlord might or might not charge for water and electricity (agua e luz incluido) or may charge for one or the other, or both.

I lived in a republica in São Paulo for a little over 4 years. All I needed/wanted was my room for space. I paid about R$560 per month for that room. I paid R$700 a month for a double room. There were no other charges associated with living there other than food and transportation.

SPTrans charges R$3.80 per ride. If you have a card (which you need a CPF and Brazilian ID to get now), one fare will give you up to three or four bus rides in a four hour time period. The subway system also costs R$3.80 per ride, although if you swipe your card after riding the bus, your fare will be discounted to R$1.90.

For cellular service, I use Vivo and Tim prepaid. I pay about R$10 a week for Vivo and this allows me to call any other Vivo user for free and gives me 500 MB of data. How much I spend for Tim depends on how much I use it, because I haven't put myself on a plan. I average about R$20 a month.

How much I spend on food a month depends on what I'm eating and who I'm feeding. I have a Brazilian wife and her daughter and grandson are visiting right now. Her son has decided he's going to live with us, also. I wasn't consulted in this decision, even though I pay 95% of the expenses out of my freelance earnings. I'm told this is just "the Brazilian way." I have no say whether he stays or goes, either. He contributed nothing except mess and heartache to the household. Her daughter (and her husband) are thinking of moving here from Recife and if they do, we may share a larger house with them (and all expenses) or they may find a place of their own.

Staples like rice and beans run in the area of about R$3-4 per kilo. Veggie prices are pretty much in line with prices in the US. Meats are little more expensive. You can expect to pay anywhere from R$8 to R$13 per kilo for boneless skinless chicken breasts and about R$12 - R$15 er kilo for ground beef.

Propane is usually sold by the bottle. Here where I live it costs about R$59 a bottle.

here you can compare ,, cost , crime health care etc ...    https://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/c … try=Brazil

> How much does it cost to rent an apartment/house in Brazil?
R$2500 rent + taxes  for a two rooms in Vila Mariana

> How much do you pay for your public transport tickets (bus, subway, train, tram)?
R$170/month

> Staple food: what do people eat and how much do they pay for basic food like bread, rice or pasta?
I make my own bread since I was spending almost R$20/day in Vila Mariana.

>What is your monthly grocery budget?
R$1200 for a family of 3 (with organics vegetables)

> How much does it cost to see a physician/doctor/specialist in Brazil ?
from R$ 80 to R$500, depends on the profissional. But, with a health insurance, you won't pay extra.

> What is your children's schooling monthly budget? R$900

> How much does it cost to fill up your car's fuel tank? I don't have a car

> How much do you pay for electricity/gas/water etc.? I don't know

> How much do you pay for your Internet/phone subscription? R$50 (pre-paid)

> How much do you pay for your lunch pack on weekdays? R$15

> How much do you pay for an espresso coffee? I don't drink coffee

> How much do you pay for a cinema ticket? I don't go to the movie

> How much does a gym membership cost in Brazil? Between R$100 and R$200

It is so difficult to say because the cost of living and the value of the currency is always changing! For example in Feb 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, the cost of 500g of black beans was 4,99R$ and in Feb 2017 it was 10,99R$. Also in Feb 2016 the exchange rate was 1USD to 4R$ so the cost for those beans was about $1USD. Now in Feb 2017, the exchange rate is 1USD to 3R$, so the cost for that bag is now $3.50USD. This makes planning in advance difficult.

Also bear in mind, rental properties usually increase an average of up to 10%/year. And insurance costs increase a standard 15%/year.

This is a great topic...but lets be clear: are your prices in Reis or USD??

For better context.

The figures are in real.

Goiania

My daughter just finished registering her son at the private school here. R$6000 a year and that doesn't count uniforms or any school supplies. School supplies here constitute a large amount of things American schools supply, like scissors, glue, construction paper, colored pen and pencils, and more. 7 years old and we also had to buy a musical scale notebook for writing music.

Mike, R$6000 per year in SP? Quite cheap. Here in Fortaleza, good private schools cost R$1200/month (over 12 months...yes 3 months holidays don't count). And Integral (full time 7:15 to 17:45)is: R$2000/month.

Wow. I still think it's weird all the things we had to buy that I feel would normally be supplied by the school in the US. It feels like a big racket to me.

Yes, the schools are expensive here. I paid just in tuition last year for 2 kids half day of school (7:40 - 12:00) R$21.140,47. This doesn't include school uniforms, books, supplies, snacks, field trips, etc. I do think the schools are good here and they don't teach dumb stuff like common core. I am glad my children are experiencing a different culture.

Yeah, kids, kid stuff and anything kid related is a big raquet in Brazil.....they know thats the fastest way to get your money outta your pocket!

Cost-of-living my wife is Brazilian. And I am an American citizen we are married she has her passport in United States and I retire in May and intend to move to Brazil for good we are very lucky my wife owns a condo in Salvador and 2002  while visiting where she was born in Armagosa   We saw a property in the middle of the Town up for sale.  The Exchange rate at that time. Was over 4 to 1  we couldn't believe their asking price so on the spot I told my wife to buy  It we  demolished it and built a two family house and put a store In  Front which we rent out both properties and we live downstairs so for the past nine or 10 years we have been collecting rent and One of herfamily members looks out for the property   When we are not there  we go every year the longest I've stayed was in 2011 for about a year  my wife stay  sometimes for about  five months just saying with my pension and social and my wife already paid social in Brazil we have no problem traveling and doing the things we  want do while we're there now when I go there for good my wife just wants me to find something to do to keep me busy so I think that would be my only problem   What I'm just trying to say is  anyone who is planning to come and live in Brazil take your time down and make a plan for your living situation and expensive because once you  stop working especially as a citizen not  Born in Brazil  you should have a stable income !!
