I'd like to hear anyone's experience with Sanitas Health Insurance, good or bad.

Thanks,

Shawn

Hi Shawn, In a previous comment I posted that my husband has Sanitas. Untill now good experiences.  Hardly no waiting lists for consults with specialists in Private Hospitals. The only thing is that they raise every year with a couple of euros the monthly insurance  payment.

Cheers, Christa

my son a newcomer to spain insured himself and wife with sanitas, finding it a little expensive they canceled the insurance,by letting it run out and informing the company regardless of this sanitas removed over 2000 euros from my sons bank account ,after contacting the bank it was re,embursed then taken out again, sanitas put on a solicitor.and demanded the monet although my son explained that he had changed the company .he had to pay a full years insurance  alongside the new company ,myself personally i have doubts about insuring with sanitas, but thats only my personal opinion,

Hi the Linedancer comments sound typical of the problems with trying to cancel insurnce contracts without doing it formally. I had one hell of a fight with MAPFRE about cancelling because I told them a few days before the policy was due to expire and they were adamant that I had to give them at least teo months notice etc.

In general though most people who have mentioned Sanitas to me seem to have generally positive experiences.

Fortunately I've had 28 years with the Spanish Health System ,and to me can't find fault with it. My wife was in hospital for six weeks with EMPHERSIMIA i just had a hernia and catarach ops both sent to private hospitals,,but there again we may find that others have had not so good.results.it depends on the luck of the draw, andof cos  insurance rates will go up as you  grow progressibly older this ive explained to my son,at 83 years old i dont expect to be around too long but gonna enjoy every bloody moment whats left

I am member of the OCU (Organisation of Consumers and Users - Organización de Consumidores y Usuarios).
All these issues with Insurance companies, Telephone providers and in many more issues they can be of a great help. Relatively a small monthly quote of about 15eur. They were great in helping me with a rental conflict  and also telephonebill problems which I already cancelled but they kept on charching me. (more or less same problems as described with Mapfre by Culebronchris).

I took out sanitas health care plan 10 years ago, after my husband died. As my Uk medical cover had not been transferred.
In March 2022 I rang to cancel as the cost was too expensive.
I was informed that it had just been renewed for another year, and I could not cancel till December 2022 and then had another 12 months to pay, meaning a 22 month cancellation period.
The cost if this will be over 5,000€
The cancellation department were extremely rude to me, not allowing me to speak or talking over me. I explained I could no longer afford the premium, then they said I signed a contract, I have never signed a contract, and asked for a copy, with my signature on it.
I was told in Spain there was not requirements for my agreement to be signed.
I was getting nowhere with sanitas so went to my bank and blocked any further payments.
I am almost 70 years old, and this last winter, I could only afford to put my heating in for an hour a day, and spent most of my days in bed.
I now have legal letters. Which arrived this week.
To pay this monthly premium will result in much more cost cutting food heating.
I have not been able to afford to fly to Uk to see my disabled sister for over 4 years. And can’t see me being able to go in the next few years.
Sanitas claim they send e mails on a annual basis to inform you if the renewal date and increased premium.
I have never received one email of this  nature in 10 years.
According to complaints on trust pilot, these emails are not sent by Sanitas, and they use an unconnected email address. To forward to you.
Open at your peril, no mention of Sanitas.
Sneaky.
I know I am in for a fight, my main concern is losing the only think I have of value is my house, even getting a solicitor is out if my price range.

Don’t drink, smoke, or go out to eat. Can’t cut back any more, on finances.

@carolinesmith3101 - Welcome to the expat.com board! Obviously, this is a very unfortunate story, I'm sorry to hear it. But Sanitas is one of many very reputable health insurance companies in Spain. I'm sure most folks will have great experiences with them. However... most companies (not just Sanitas) do auto-renew your policy, so you have to be careful to cancel early (and in their specified manner) to avoid this.

In your case, you should escalate your claim with Sanitas and explain your situation. I would be extremely surprised if you couldn't get them to cancel/refund. Certainly, it's inconceivable that the cancellation period is 22 months! And "over 5,000€" sounds like an awful lot for a Spanish health insurance policy. If you can't afford food and heating, as you mentioned, then such a premium is contributing to your financial hardship. @Chrisbizz mentions an organization that might be able to help you, if you don't make any progress on your own. Or maybe try the Citizens Advice Bureau. I appreciate you're frustrated, and it's easy to get down-hearted, but you have to resolve this immediately, rather than letting it drag on (and cost more money).

Furthermore, I believe you don't need private health insurance, and haven't needed it for several years now: as a UK pensioner you are entitled to get an S1 form from the UK, and this evidences your right to state healthcare in the EU. Spain will accept this, and you'll get treatment as good as (or better than) the NHS back home. I'd imagine there's a little bit of bureaucracy involved in getting one issued, and then registering it in Spain, but it will be time well spent.
