Passport renewals for Expats

For those of you who are US citizen can you share your experience about passport renewals and paying taxes while away from home?  I am still in the US but will move to Chiang Mai within 2 years.

All the best,
Joy

Passport , US  embassy easy. Bere un thailand ,, taxes do online!

Passport renewals depend on your status,  Tourist, working in Thailand, married to a Thai, Retirement visa, and so forth.  you will still have to pay taxes in the US if it is money, such as retirement income, or if it is money that has not been taxed already, you will not have to pay state taxes any longer as you will not be leaving there any longer. If you are coming for long term, I would suggest you bring a car that is at least 2 years old, put it on the boat, you will not have to pay tax in Thailand, the cars in the US are better made and much cheaper than in Thailand, and if you need health care let me know, we have very cheap policy if you are healthy.  Good Luck to You.

The procedure to bring cars in Thailand is very tough, I gave up in 2013 to put the car in my container even my wife is Thai... after I got full undestanding and estimation from custom,,,

The complete  procedure can be found in the Thai Custom website link  :

Never put a car in a the container if you don't get authorization and right paper fillesd in from Thailand as the car will be seized and sold in auction, import duty and taxes are very high and can reach nearly 300% !!

Passport renewal, just go to US Embassy website in Thailand and follow the process :

I appreciate your advise ctierrymk.

As mentioned before new passports can be obtained through the US Embassy in Thailand and will take up to 14 days.  I obtained new passport this year and it took 10 days.

As a US citizen you are required to file tax return every year no matter where you live in the world.  I do mine online using one of the commercial tax programs.  You still have the option of mailing if you prefer.

You will also need to report foreign bank and financial accounts (FBAR) each year if their total exceeds 10,000 dollars anytime during the year.  The report can only be done online at the following site.

Which type of Thailand visa are you planning to obtain?
