Good areas in Santiago for Gringos to live

If you are working via the internet why have you settled on Santiago?

Bob, we have a business opportunity here. Also, we're young (late 20s/early 30s) & PTs (perpetual travelers) so we never really "settle" on anything...haha! Just a good starting point for us.

Also, how does renting a place in the Dominican work? Are there leases to sign or just a handshake? Can we go month-to-month? Things to ask for or watch out for? Etc

welcome to the forum!  The best way to find a place to rent is by being here.  There is everything from daily, weekly, monthly rentals to 1 or2 year contracts. Depending what you want, the terms will change.  For example on a 1 year lease you will likely need 1 month deposit, 1st months rent and 1 month that will be paid out in commission if you use an agent. Some places also require someone to sign for you as a guarantor!  It all depends.

As to what areas are good - again it all depends what you want!  What I like or think is good may not work for you.

Things to look at - electricity availability,  ability to hook up high speed internet,  cell phone coverage,  neighborhood noise  - especially for those working from home!

Lots of other items to know about but this is a good start.
