I've been there.  Seems to me it's smallish w/o any amenities?  But of course I could be wrong since I wasn't there to use the amenities, per se lol

Hopefully somebody else will have better info for you, Scott.  Oh, and welcome to the kingdom!

Scott

I live on Arabian Homes. It has got all the normal facilities. Shop, dry cleaners, tailors, DVD library, gym, hairdressers, book library, Restraunt, squash courts, tennis courts, basket ball court and swimming pools shared with a number of properties!

It is very quite and most people here are families but there area social things going on Scottish Dancing on a Tuesday, Salsa on a Saturday etc.

Regards

Martin

Thanks for your responses.  One final question since I'll be on single status and living without a family is there a way to connect/socilize with others?

Cheers,

Scott

Scott drop me a DM when you get here I can hook you up with a few people. Social scene here in Riyadh is very active you just need to know the right people!

Hi Scott, welcome to the forum. Martin is a good person to know, he is a very helpful individual and he know alot about the social scene  in Riyadh.

Hi Scott,
I stayed there for 4 years. The compound is the closest to the City Center which is Olaya. One of the oldest compound but a quiet one. Not too much amenities compared to the rest of new compounds build, but you will enjoy a pool you will share with 4 houses only. Amenities : restaurant, grocery, gym, nursery school for kids, swimming pool in front of your house (shared by 5 others) and good neighborhood!Hope this helps.

I lived in Arabian Homes when I first got to Riyadh and loved it! I find that it's an especially good compound for single people/ bachelors... The gym is killer! Also the compound restaurant is very popular and is considered one of the better ones around compared to other compounds (not like mine that got closed down). The only thing is that the villas are older and smaller (but cosy!). Overall I think it's a great compound to get to know people on but does have quite basic facilities. ENJOY! :)

Hi

I see you are previously from England!

I am too from England, looking to move to Saudi in the summer.

How are you finding Riyadh? What part of England are you from?

Hi emeraldsaregreen, I am from Manchester

Riyadh is different to the UK but its how you make it @emeraldsaregreen

Hi,

I am wondering if you are in Riyadh yet. I am getting an opportunity to work there and I need help and advice on housing.

Does anyone know what is the average rent for furnished apartment in the Arabian Homes Compound?

Is there any available transportation services to major hospitals like King Saud Medical City?

Thanks,

as it's one of the best compound it's very expensive!

The available transportation service is a cab!

Hi,

I have just moved off Arabian Homes, but you (or the company you work for) have chosen well.  It's is a very clean and friendly compound, whilst you don't think this the very first time you drive in past all the security and the mile of chaccaines!!

I was fortunate to be in a 2 bed 3 bath villa on my own, whilst a little dated, they have everything you need and if you have any issues, even if a bulb goes, the guys are quickly there to fix it for you.

It has all the amenities, 16 pools, but these are only small and are shared between about 8 villas, but you can use any.  The restaurant, is not expensive and the food is really good, and if you can't be bothered walking down there, they will deliver!

The compound shop is also very well stocked, a hairdresser, DVD rental, library, squash and tennis courts, a gym and even an aviary, along with birds has a selection of guinea pigs, rabbits etc, for the kiddies to feed.

Just over the road, ( yes there is life outside the compound!) there is a lively little coffee shop just opened, it's painted black but can't remember it's name, does a fantastic range in sandwiches and sweets, this is on the Abi Baker Al Saddiq road.  On the same stretch is a couple of Turkish barbers that will give you a shave and a haircut for 30sar, but haggle, thee is also a fuel station just on the way in.  Further down the King Abdullah road towards King Fahad, is the Tamimis supermarket on the side of the Sahara Mall, with it's array of shopping and eating places.

Ideal spot really.

I however, have decided to move off compound and rent my own 2 bed 3 bath apartment for a fraction of the price, and as a result, have managed to pocket 70% of the housing allowance provided by my employer! because at the end of the day! I think that's why we are all here in the first place.

Enjoy your time in KSA.....

Regard

Tony

:o ... assuming the 2 bed 3 bath apartment is non-furnished, it should be 25-30 K SAR, then can I understand the rent there is up to 100 K SAR?

You are correct, these are not furnished, they do however, have a fitted kitchen and A/C in all rooms....

It's a wise decision you have made.... I would do the same if I were in your place, but I am wondering if I can use the compound facilities like the tennis court as an outsider?

I am an American looking for a good compound and have come across this blog. I was planning on Arizona but they have no vacancies so now I am looking elsewhere. I am really looking for a place with a great bunch of people who are very sociable. I am a bachelor and hope to find a group of friends to enjoy my time here with.

Is there anyone who can advise me? Thanks, Jack

Hello Jack,

Arabian homes is a good compound, I stayed on there for a while, and you will enjoy it, not sure about the social aspect as I never got the chance, everyone seemed to keep themselves to themselves!

But regarding facilities and cleanliness, it's as good as anywhere.

Best of luck mate..

Thanks for the response. Any other ideas? I really want a place with an active social scene.

I have a place that is off compound, which, as a white English man, is quite a different thing to do, I socialise with workmates and enjoy the company of the guys in my apartment block, I play golf, quite a bit, lol.

Plenty of eating places around, and I also enjoy paying local rates for things and not artificially inflated prices compound shops and restaurants charge.

May sound a bit thrifty, but I enjoy not being cooped up in a false atmosphere, where I have to get searched every time I enter my living place, like a criminal.

Just saying :-). Searching for somewhere is half the fun, but if you want a good compound, it all comes down to money! The more you pay, the (suposedly) better it is.

It looks like I may have to get a temp place not on a compound due to availability. Any ideas?

Hi, i am looking for Arabian Homes, would be shifting till end of the year. Want to know if there are any indians living there?

Yes there are 2 Indian families on the compound.

Hi Tony,
Where do you play golf? I'm in Riyadh again after a spell back in Blighty - would be great to get a game in!

Cheers!
Tony

Hi Tony,

We play at a few clubs in and around Riyadh.  We have a regular crew, tend to play every weekend. None of us are superstars, it's just good to get out and there are some cracking courses round here.

You are more than welcome to join us. Just let me know, coz your name needs to be on the list.

Oh yes, we tend to tee off early ;)

Most of the nationalities living inside are British. May be 80% and the people managing are British. They are very strict when it comes to screening nationality. The ambiance inside is western culture inside Saudi Arabia. You can say home away from home. You can even roam around wearing shorts, bikinis in the pool and even clothe less sun bating.

Ironically, most western compounds have westerners on them, how strange eh??

And on most western compounds, the likes of abayas are banned from being worn, and people walk round in western clothes, how strange all this type of activity on a western compound!!

Hi. We have been told that we have the choices of Arabian Homes (but it is full) or Villa Rosas ....Star or al Wadi. Anyone know info on these compounds? Are they all Western compounds? I have been trying to do I internet research, but not a lot of info found out there....

Hi Scott I would be happy to socialise with you, call me any time.

Hi Tony - I was looking at Arabian Homes but it is very expensive for a bachelor.

You mentioned that you found a good and reasonably priced 2-bed apartment and I would be grateful if you could advise me on how to go about doing the same.

Many thanks
Hein

Hi Hein,

What is your nationality? and is it compound accommodation you are looking for?

Let me know and I will PM you some details.

Thanks

Tony

Hi Tony

I am a South African working for Al Rajhi bank.

My family decided to stay in SA so I don't necessarily need to stay in a compound although I would like to be in a nice environment with a pool & gym. I am staying in a hotel apartment at the moment and getting a bit of cabin fever now. I think I would settle in quickly in a compound even if I live alone in a 1 bed apartment. And outside of a compound the only area I could see myself in is Diplomatic Quarter.

I am open to a sharing arrangement if say, only a small villa or 2 bed apartment is available, as there is a work colleague (another South African) who I can share with - we are both senior managers with our families back home.

From your post I gathered that you have experience living inside a compound and outside.

I am also mindful of costs, and even though I can easy afford to live in any compound, I am careful not to overspend and I am looking for a good balance between lifestyle and value.

Grateful for any advice.

Best regards
Hein
