So after years of it being on the table I'm moving to Libya :) or :( is to be determined

In time honoured fashion of my employers (Libyan) I have no idea where I'll be living (only that its a house in the centre of town)

As my employers are Libyan most things will be taken care of and I'll be well looked after, one question I do have which I can't seem to find a straight answer to, is internet speed, how is it? i.e I subscribe to a VPN and Netflix (and also hoping to use SKYGO, iPlayer, 4OD etc from my Apple TV) is this possible with the speeds or should I be looking to get a satellite installed for SKY etc..

It''s available from anywhere in the world if you have a VPN (I use tunnelbear for e.g.)

Netflix has three regions US, UK and Sweden by using a VPN I can switch between the US and UK versions to get the best of both (they have different content). Or you can change the DNS of your router to point it at the US/UK - Google is your friend ;)

Anyway back to my original question can anyone help with internet speed in Libya

Flasher

Forget it it, internet speed is pathetic. Seriously, you're better off buying an OSN box for movies etc (about 700 dinars a year) and an Abu Dhabi Sport box for all live PL football (about 400 dinars a year)
For CL football you'll need an AlJazeera Sport card, don;t know the price but not expensive.
All available from Gurgi Road.

There are snide boxes available but I don't know much about them.

Fuzzy_Dunlop

Cheers, thought as much i'll make sure a box is installed for when I arrive

Though in preparation i've been on a downloading spree and have 241 films and 474 TV Shows to watch and 25,000 songs to listen too, so boredom shouldn't be too much of an issue

Is the speed even fast enough for Skype/facetime etc?

Flasher

The biggest issue in Tripoli right now is boredom, there isn't exactly a massive social scene at the moment, you're as well to come prepared.
Skype works fine without the video, Facetime is usually OK

TBH, the expat scene doesn't bother me that much as I've worked solely for a Libyan family for the last nine-years so most of my friends are Arabs who like the western "lifestyle"

I won't put too much up here but, if you don't mind I'll drop you a message with contact details when I arrive

Libyan RocknRoll

ADSL: 580 kbps
WiMax: 2 mbps
Wimax is horribly unstable though, recommend ADSL if you have a phone line.

fahim007

if your employe is willing to bear the cost you can get high speed(8mbps) lease line connection from LTT you can easily run HD streams on.

unlike the 3g, 4g LTE or other broadband standards worldwide thats is the maximum you can get from local service provider as of now!
