Hello,
My husband has found a job in Nairobi and we will be moving there during july. We have 3 kids (3 years old, 2 years old and 5 months).
I wanted to know if there are Nursery school in Karen district ?
Is there also a paediatrician ?
What should I know about the Kenyan life with children ?
Thanks for your reply !

Where are you from?  Its hard to answer this questions without background.  Child care and education is all very easy in Kenya.  Karen is a more upscale part of town so its good.  I would suggets you travel there, then ask at your office and all these questions would be sorted out for you within 2 hours of your stepping in your new office.  People are very willing to help, so you shouldn't worry.  i am not in Kenya though, I am kenyan and have lived thre most of my life.

Thanks for your answer.
We are a French family.
I was also wandering if a treatment against the malaria is necessary, overall for my children ?
Did you have some when you were living in Nairobi ?

Hi !!

Karen is one of the best area to live in Nairobi.  It's green, safe.

For Nursery school, I am sure there is in Karen...  In fact, there are plenty of Kindergarden in Kenya (many Montesori) and there must be something in Karen I am sure.

Kenyan life with children is great as you can hire the service of one househelp. Secondly, Kenyan are very friendly with young kids, very very very !! In fact, Kenyan are friendly people.

I have two kids (8 months and three years old) and two househelps (one for cleaning/cooking and one for taking care of kids).  In Nairobi, expats even do shopping or go on holidays with the househelps, in fact they do everything with the househelp, a bit too much to my taste.  If you want things to go well with you househelp, just don't forget not to underpay them, respect them but give clear orders with simple English but clear.

Paediatrician ??  They are good doctors in Karen !! A new hospital has just opened but I have been told is not that good.  But, anyway, you are just at 15 km from Nairobi center where they are plenty of paediatricians.

Malaria ??  No not needed, since Nairobi is at 1600 m (and Karen even higher than that) although with time and climate chaqnges, it will necessary but not before 2020 I guess !!  But needed if you go on holidays at the coast or at Victoria lake.

People living in Nairobi don't take treatment against malaria. The only thing you need to worry when you arrive is digestive problems such as dhiarrea, amibes, etc...  Wash the food until you are used to it.

As kisiacyndy said, people are friendly and always ready to help. And do not worry, Nairobi is a very very modern city (it's not the jungle) !!
