Whether you are planning to move to Tunis or you have just settled there, moving around could not have been easier. Indeed, the capital city has a modern and efficient transport network which will allow you to travel anywhere safely if you do not wish to drive. You can thus rely on buses, light railway, taxis, and even other private means of transport.

Traveling by bus in Tunis

Tunis's wide bus network will allow you to travel anywhere across the city and its outskirts. Yellow in color, these buses are operated by the Société des Transports de Tunis (TRANSTU). The following are the major stations:

  • Tunis-Marine
  • Light railway

Between the subway and tramway, the light railway is the main means of transport in Tunis. The light railway can take you from Tunis to Ariana, Ben Arous, Cité Ettadhamen, Cité Ibn Khaldoun and Den Den, the University Campus, El Mourouj, etc.

Traveling by train in Tunis

If you have to travel to the Northern suburbs, you can catch the train at the TGM Station at Tunis-Marine (Tunis 'Sidi Bousaîd La Marsa line). To travel to the Southern suburbs, go to the Barcelona Square Railway Station (Tunis - Hammam - Lif - Borj - Cédria line).

If you wish to travel within Tunis by car, two private transport companies provide their services till the city's outskirts.

Traveling by taxi in Tunis

Tunis taxis are yellow. Note that taxi fares are regulated by local authorities. Moreover, Tunis taxis are not allowed to leave the capital city.

There are several taxi apps in Tunis, some of which will still require you to call a taxi to book it. Other apps like Bolt and OTO work in pretty much the same way as Uber or Lyft.

Taxi fares are relatively cheap in Tunis, and getting around by taxi may be a very convenient way to explore the city, especially if you are new here.

Renting a car in Tunis

Renting a car in Tunis is also an option. There are lots of car rental companies where you can get a vehicle for a day, week, or month. When renting out a car in Tunis, make sure to get proper insurance. As you will be driving in a new country, it's essential that both you and the vehicle are fully protected against road accidents. To rent a car in Tunis, you will need your passport, driver's license, and, in some cases, a rental agreement.
