In order to obtain a Brazilian passport you must first naturalize as a Brazilian citizen. For Ordinary Naturalization one must wait for 4 years from the date on which they were granted permanency before applying to naturalize (reduced to 1 year if permanency was based on marriage or on having a Brazilian child), and must meet ALL of the requirements of naturalization including passing a test of proficiency in the Portuguese language.

Only then can one apply for a Brazilian passport.

Thanks Pete, that was fast. But if one applies, are there any restrictions on movement? I mean like, if I submitted my forms today with everything in order, is there a period within which I must remain in Brazil, otherwise the process is nullified? Please expatiate. Thanks.

Yes, there is restriction on your movement. If you have RNE and you stay out of the country for more than 2 years you lose your status. If you have RNE and would like to apply for naturalization you need to stay a number of days in Brazil depending under what category you are applying. What category are you interested in? Usually its a minimum of 1 year stay in Brazil.

Married or Brazilian child permanent residents can apply after one year.

No restrictions of movement as such after you submit your documents but I would avoid staying out of the country longer than 3 months.

Everyone says it takes a year after submitting the documents to be approved.

You need to be able to answer some written questions in basic Portuguese for the English test, usually it's based on a newspaper article
