Rape in Brazil

mugtech

I just read that a male member of congress told a female on the floor of the congress that he would not rape her because she was not worth it.  Rather unpleasant words in a nation trying to help women where 137 sexual assaults are reported daily.  Is this a problem for expats?

Not in the least mug....

If you knew anything at all about the absurd political system and the post-election disputes going on right know maybe you'd understand this is all just nonsense designed to divert attention from the real problems in this country; namely the endemic political corruption that is the REAL rape this country has to worry about.

Cheers,
James

Nice to know telling women they are not worth raping is business as usual
Thanks for the info.

Not to worry, although the crime of rape is a problem here, as with many other countries; it is taken very seriously and conviction rates are extremely high when compared with other crimes.

Well RAINN (Rape Abuse & Incest National Network) states that a female is sexually assaulted in the USA every 107 seconds (or 807 per day).

Looks like women are safer here in Brazil than they are in the USA, mug! The following United Nations graphic kind of supports that theory. It shows the USA leading Brazil by a couple of points. Amazingly look at Canada how low the rate is there, almost 20 times lower than the US rate. (bear in mind this is per 100,000 of population so takes out the factor of difference in overall population)  That should have women in the USA flocking north of the 49th.

About your Brazilian rape statistic, I doubt about it. I am affraid statistics do not alway reflect the reality. I am not a crime expert but I believe rape is a type of crime that victims would find difficult to report to authorities, thereafter not appearing in statistic. Brazilians do not have much confidence in the police. And Brazilian women are certainly even less confident to report a rape to the local PM office.  Then rapes are often (I do not the numbers honneslty) happening within the circle of familly, friends, colleagues...Thereafter being very difficult to report if the victim does not have insurance that her case will be deal with properly and will obtain protection from the authorities.
For exemple, I do not think it exists here like in Europe and US/Canada, all exclusive women police teams, expert in dealing with these type situation and being able to protect the victim if necessary.
Seriously more rape in Belgium and US than in Brazil, why not. But almost three time more rapes in Sweden! I do not know but these numbers do not feel right.
