I have started the process of migrating to Portugal. I have received my tax ID number. Hope to go through the D7 visa process within the next 3-12 months. I have a question to put out on this forum…

1.Can I open a Portuguese  bank account and use my American address, prior to getting a rental address.?

Yes, you can open a Portuguese bank account as a non-resident and use your American address before securing a rental. You do not need a Portuguese address to establish the account, but you do need to provide official proof of your U.S. address, such as a recent utility bill (water, gas, electric), bank statement, or official government correspondence displaying your name and US address.

Some major Portuguese banks allow non-residents to apply remotely or with the help of a relocation agency. According to expat discussions, banks like Banco Atlântico Europa, Millennium BCP, Bankinter, and Novo Banco are commonly utilized for remote or non-resident setups.

To secure a D7 visa, opening a Portuguese bank account using your US address is a critical first step. For a successful application, you must fund this account with your qualifying income before your visa interview.

Funding is key: You must deposit at least 12 months' worth of required income into the account.

Maintain the balance: Leave these funds untouched until your visa is officially approved.

Non-resident status: Your account will be registered under your US address. You will update it to your Portuguese address later.
