Quality of customer service in the Netherlands

Hello everyone,

Customer service can say a lot about everyday life in the Netherlands, and for many expats, it’s something that could take time to get used to. In order to help expats and soon-to-be expats to adjust to local expectations, we invite you to share your insights.

How would you describe customer service in the Netherlands?

Are staff generally friendly and helpful, or more formal and direct?

How do businesses handle complaints or requests for refunds?

Do expats get treated differently than locals?

Any tips on how to get the best service in the Netherlands?

Share your experiences and stories, whether positive, challenging or funny!

Thank you for your contribution.

Great topic! One thing that surprises many expats is how formal the complaint process can be in the Netherlands once you move beyond the first customer service call.

Dutch companies are generally friendly enough on the surface, but if something goes wrong, a subscription that won't cancel, a service that was never delivered, or a bill that keeps coming after you've moved out, the system can feel like a wall. Customer service often can't actually resolve anything, and you end up going in circles.

What many expats don't know is that the Netherlands actually has strong consumer protection laws. If a company ignores your cancellation or keeps billing you, you have the legal right to send a formal notice of default (ingebrekestelling), and if that doesn't work, the Geschillencommissie can issue a binding ruling, often in your favour.

The tip I'd give any expat: document everything in writing from the start. Emails, not calls. And if a company stops responding, know that you have more options than just giving up.

Happy to help anyone who's stuck in one of these situations , feel free to reach out.
