NEW in Malta :)

karina2

Hi Everyone,
So I'm English, Im 22 and moving to Malta in roughly a month with my partner (already have accommodation) in particular to Qala, Gozo, so if anyone can offer particular advice on living in Gozo for example where to food shop, where to go etc. that would be great. :)
But any general advice on:
How to meet people/make friends
How to find a new job and what market to get into (not fussy)
Any information that's good to know in general
Any procedures I need to be aware of

and just generally any advice at all would be great!!!!
Thanks in advance!
Karina

How well do you know Gozo? WIth regards to work it depends on what you want to do and what you are qualified for but vacancies may be limited compared to Malta, many people do travel to Malta to work.
With regards to shopping, most of the villages do have grocery stores which are fine for every day needs and no more expensive then the bigger supermarkets, also there are various mobile greengrocers, bakers and fish sellers round most days.  There are a few larger supermarkets around the island and Lidl on the outskirts of Victoria.  In Victoria there are two main shopping area Dukes and Arkadia where there are mainly clothes shops plus Republic Street but they both have a supermarket. There are quite a few shops in Palm Street and the other lanes where you can get household items.
As to making friends there are a number of places to go for a coffee where you may meet up.

Just head up to zeppies bar in qala square esp at weekends, it's a good  friendly vibe with live music, get chatting to people, it's a good mix of ex pats and gozitans, you'll soon find out all you need to know. Best wishes

A few things to consider when thinking of moving to Qala, no cash machine, no bank, no post office, unless anyone knows different.
We went out for a drink one evening with neighbours and could not find anywhere that would serve us as we weren't eating. You would need to go to the neighbouring villages.
If you use the busses, it's on a ferry route so in peak season it may mean standing to and from Victoria. I personally find the place very noisy, lots of big dusty trucks and boy racers.
On the plus side, the 2 shops I know of are reasonable, there's a Pharmacy and the traditional bakery is good.
For us, a move next year is almost certain.
