Import Duty

I am mainly looking to import from the UK.

There is no import duty from one EU country to another.

I believe this to be the case on personal items, and also some other items but I do know there is duty payable on items such as electrical, (ie computers, white goods, phones etc).  My problem is I can find loads of info and acts regarding this but no actual lists or tables of rates payable for dutiable items.

Much as it would be delightful for there to be nothing to pay to import above such items for commercial purposes (VAT paid in UK), I just can't believe I would be that lucky.  hehe

The link below states the items that are dutiable.  Maybe I'm not reading it correctly but I believe there are taxable items, even within the EU.

I am aware that in Spain some items are dutiable upon import, even tho they are also EU.

The info on that website looks to me as though its from before Malta joined the EU

I have many many bookmarks for lots of places citing dutiable items for importing to Malta,  all I need are the import rates.

After MANY hours reading I have come to the conclusion that to import EU to EU is duty 'free' BUT certain items (like the items listed above)are not.  That is the extent of my knowledge so far.  I have yet to find out which items are/are not exempt and if so, how much is payable on them.

A good source of info but as usual with taxation,  I'm still confused.

I can't see why computers etc, bought from elsewhere in the EU would attract import duty, as its against the EU principle of free movement of goods and services.


Are you sure you don't mean goods bought from another EU country, but which duty hasn't yet been paid or has been refunded ? If you are an importer of goods, you can elect to either pay the VAT in the exporting EU country, or in the importing country. The goods may have also been imported into another EU country from outside the EU, but remained in a duty free area.

George's view sounds right to me.  But the Department should know for sure.
