Funeral costs?

The cost of burial can be enormous.
I have heard of costs in excess of E25,000 being quoted to buy a plot.
Cremations are conducted on Sicily and the ashes returned.
Official burials at sea are limited to 5 per year in the designated area but you could have it done outside territorial waters.
I have not looked at any funeral plans here but there are websites and you could enquire.
Another thing to consider is making a Malta will or having a codicil added to your UK will as things are not quite the same here.
Another thing to consider is ensuring that your wife has her own bank account with adequate funds in it because as soon as one dies and the bank notified, joint bank accounts are frozen until legal procedures are completed and that could take some time.
I am sure others can contribute to this question.

Thats interesting about the bank accounts, will have to watch that one.
Won't need a burial plot as my plans are to give the ashes to one of my sons to dispose of in a way i have mentioned in my will.
Ok on the Malta will too.
So I presume transporting the body to Sicily is no problem, am sure there will be charges involved for paper work, yes it's a sensitive subject but one i need to be clear about, then i can store it and forget it, i would hate to leave my loved ones a big bill.
It's funny working in the NHS here i know loads of info but not in any other country.
I bet some people get a shock with the bills etc.

Thanks Mick have emailed them, didn't fill me with confidence though because when i clicked the link to send them an email it failed, then i noticed it should have had info@ before the address, so i input that manually, then it failed again.

Think they don't get many emails!!!!

Friend of ours paid around €5000 to have a body returned and cremated in the UK.

I did notice on the site you sent me it did say "cremations not available yet" so maybe there are plans, it would make sense on a small island.

5000 Euro seems quite a bit, wonder if its because its back to the UK.

Cremations are not conducted on Malta but done on Sicily. The subject of cremations is a contentious subject, religiously and politically on Malta.

Hi, I have emailed them and got a 'non delivered' message (happens so often out here) so I have sent another to an alternative address.  I await their reply. I have asked them several questions regarding costs and alternative disposals.
The subject of Malta having a crematorium has been debated over many years. The last project announced in 2012 has been shelved, see http://crematorium.eu/malta-welcome.html

One needs to bear in mind that Catholicism is the declared religion of 98% of the population and that Catholics do not favour cremation because they believe in resurrection of the body after death. They follow the custom of burying the dead.
