Proposed LPG Storage Facility (Delimara Point)

MikeInPoulton

For those living in the 'South'......can you tell me anything about the recent (I know) gas storage facility proposed off the Point? Even though my 'family' live reasonably close in Qrendi nothing seems to have filtered back to them (except what is mentioned in the news). I'm particularly interested in local feelings, impact on roads, views, safety issues etc that may be talked about in the bars and clubs. This is not necessarily just for those in the South I'd appreciate input from anybody else with a take on it. Will probably get full low down when next across.

Cheers

Hi Mike,

this is a highly controversial and explosive topic !

The worst  known accident with LNG resulted in around 600 dead and 7000 burned by the explosion of 11.000 m3 of LNG.

The storage at Delimara are planned to contain up to 180.000 m3 of LNG.

Going by the high safety standards seen in Malta I wouldn't worry to much ? But that is up to you to judge ....

In my opinion an accident would severly effect the Marsaxlokk bay.

I think the published comparison with 50 atomic bombs might be too exagarated.

Cheers

Thanks Ricky

(and thanks for being the gent and not pointing out my deliberate mistake in the subject heading). I can't quite understand why my in-laws etc don't seemed that concerned (may be a case of NIMBYism) but I am shocked to hear of the tragic events in an earlier accident. I've read a little in the MaltaToday website, and a little here and there, however there is an underlining theme of playing it down (in my opinion) in the media (its either money or secret societies at play here), hence my want of feelings from the person on the street. Accidents apart, what would be the impact on the local infrastructure, views, conservation (as a rambler you may have a take on this), house prices and tourism. I love the South and it would be a real shame to see yet another 'blot on the landscape' put there for all the wrong reasons.

I've added my little response to his 'musings'.....I doubt he will see past his political blinkers. But you are right Terry - if Eddy says it's safe then let's celebrate.  :o
