Moving and working as self-employed: right order of things

nilonilonilo

I'm moving to Malta at the end of this summer and would like to continue my freelance job which i'm now doing in Belgium.

I've been reading through the forums a bit and so for i've worked out the following bits:

- Getting the EU national ID card is going to take a loooong time :) In order to do that, besides getting the appointment and all that, i have to fill out a form, applying as self-employed.

- Registering as a self-employed worker doesn't seem that hard (found forms for that too, with the employment office and then VAT), but you need a social security number. So that would be the first thing to do? I read a post about it on "How to get by in Malta", where it seemed quite straightforward, although it looked like the office was in Sliema, not Valetta, and it didn't say if there are many of those offices and if you can choose one at random. Can I get a Social Security Number just with my Belgian passport?

- Other than that, have I overlooked something?

Recap:
1) social security number
2) register as self-employed
3) apply for ID
.
.
.
.
.
.
4) many months later: get a discount fare on the bus :)

Any idea how much social security contributions are for freelancers? (A whopping 20% in Belgium...)
And I suppose i'll need to find accountant to do my taxes?

So many answers. Many thanks for any input you might give me - Nil

Hi nilonilonilo,

You are quite right on your brief in regards to what you will need to do in order to get yourself settled here in Malta. You can have a look HERE all the offices where you can apply for a SS number in Malta. If I am not wrong, a part from your passport, you also need to provide a proof of address, such a tenancy agreement or a bill under your name.
In regards to the SS contributions, HERE you can more or less calculate how much you will be paying.

I hope I could help!

Cheerio,
Antonio
