Hello American living in Venice

I'm too far away to do you any good but I thought I'd wish you good luck in Italy.  I've been an expat in foreign places all my adult life, and I enjoy learning about other cultures and people and if you have an open mind (which it sounds like you have!) you will have a great time in your new country. I've been in Italy several times and love the place and who knows may end up there yet.

Hi, have you visited any cool places since you have been there? Is riding gondlas fun? I wish I was there right now in stead of school. Sounds alot more fun.

I have lived here for one year and some months. Im from Indiana. Its very different here because its an Island and the culture here is very very closnetted. In the older days people never left thier individual island even so it makes the culture so much different. they have very little items here for convience. They take pride in doing things the "hard way" its a bit of a culture shock to someone from America where we have everything we want at our fingertips. But also with that comes a very strong family bond along with very strong morals. They are wonderful people who care very deeply for each other.

  I have never riden in a gondola can you believe it????

My husband is Venetian and they believe that this is for " tourist" lol so I've actually never done this altho I HAVE rode on a " traghetto" which is a gondola but only takes you across the grande canal from one side to the other. But you have to stand and not sit like the Venetians do. There are so many cool places here you cant see it all. The best I have found to see Venice is to just get lost and see all the parts.

Why do you have such an interest in Venice? or is it Italy in general? Do you have family from here?

In my world history class we just finished a chapter on Rome. And I read a book that was about Italy and it mention Venice, so I went out of my way to do some research on google maps and it was very pretty. I don't have any family there but one day I want to own a bakery there. It seems so peaceful there and I was thinking that there wouldn't be many crimes sence the whole city is build on the water. I just can't wait till I'm older then I'll be able to go there on my own.

Well, when you do decide to come... just remember NOT to come in July or August.The whole city is full of tourist and its hard to get around. June, Sept, even May are the best times to come and the flight fare is alot cheaper at that time also so you will save alot of money!

Hello Made, We have been to Venice a few time & stay on Lido, great place lagoon one side & ten minute walk to the other & the beach. Went for new years eve celebrations 2008 a great night, we go to a different Italian city every year for new year the whole family are out & its always a good night, what a change from England with all its stupid drunks, if you get a chance try Bologna new years eve, it's a fantastic time, As for us, hopefully we move to Sardinia next year, can't wait. I am living in Mestre now. Where are you from? Are you still going to school?

I am living in Meolo :-) it's 20 min by train from Mestre. How are you doing there? Do you like it?

I like it much more than Venice. I work at a Language School here and enjoy it very much. Still miss home though!!

Mestre is more enjoyable than Venice :-) And personally, I think that water in Venice stinks :-) I attended high school there...in front of the fish market. Every morning, at 6.30 a.m.--It's been kind of a nightmare..and when a bird pooed on my jacket, I decided that I've already had enough of Venice XD and they call it the most romantic city in the world...well, I disagree! :-D
