Planning My First Long Stay in Italy – Looking for Advice

Hello everyone!

I'm new to the Expat.com community and am currently planning a long-term stay in Italy.

I've always been fascinated by Italian culture, history, architecture, food, and lifestyle. My goal is to experience the daily lives of the locals, not just a superficial tourist trip, and to truly immerse myself in the local culture.

I'd love to hear advice from both locals and expats:

• Which city would you recommend as your first long-term residence?

• Is it easy to make friends and integrate into the local community in Italy?

• What do you enjoy most about living in Italy?

• What preparations should a newcomer make?

Thank you for your suggestions; I look forward to learning from your experiences.

Hey 😊

I’d say it really depends on your budget and what kind of life you’re looking for.

Making friends and integrating? Not really easy. Italians are friendly, but social circles can be quite closed. Knowing Italian can help.

What I like most is the sense of freedom in daily life… less pressure, less “performative” rules about how things should be, more space to just live.

And for preparation—just be ready for surprises 😄 Things don’t always run on strict schedules. Also keep an eye on scioperi (strikes), especially on Fridays and Mondays—they can really disrupt travel plans.

For a truly immersive, authentic Italian life, Bologna or Turin are highly recommended first residences. They offer robust local culture, deep history, world-renowned food scenes, and excellent amenities, yet remain significantly less tourist-heavy and more affordable than major hubs like Rome or Milan.

While younger generations often speak English, basic Italian is essential to truly connect with neighbors, shopkeepers, and understand daily nuances, so start learning Italian before you arrive. You don't need to be fluent, but conversational basics go a long way in showing respect.
