UK bank account & Cyprus tax residency

Hi,

Does anybody know which UK banks, if any, will not close the current account if you change from a UK tax resident to a Cyprus tax resident?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I've been using HSBC for 18 years in both Malta and now  here in  Cyprus...as long as you have transactions going in and out of the account ..they wrote to me and said it's not a problem for them

Spookily I got this this afternoon ....

We are writing to let you know about some regulatory and legal changes that affect the way HSBC UK Bank plc (HSBC) provides certain banking services and products for customers like you who live in the European Economic Area (EEA).

The good news is that we don't expect these changes to affect our products and services that you currently use, so you don't need to do anything.

What's changing

A new rule will be introduced by 11 January 2027, called 'Article 21c of the European Union Capital Requirements Directive', which we refer to as CRD6.

CRD6 sets out rules for banks based outside the EEA when offering products and services - such as deposit accounts, loans, and guarantees - to customers living within the EEA. These changes affect HSBC's ability to serve customers living in the EEA if their accounts are held outside the EU. For example, this may apply if you have a UK bank account but live in the EEA.

What this means for you

Your current products and services with HSBC UK Bank plc in the UK will remain unchanged. The new requirements don't affect what you already have - everything will continue as usual and our existing service processes will stay the same.

While you live outside the UK, we won't offer you any other HSBC UK Bank plc products or services but you're welcome to ask about anything you're interested in at any time
