Plovdiv

Dhampton20

Hi All

My names Dave, I have been offered a position in Plovdiv and I'm trying to find out the realities of living in Plovdiv with my wife and 2younf children 5 & 3 none of us speak Bulgarian.
We have visited Plovdiv a few times however we know living somewhere and holidaying are quite different.
I have a few questions so if anyone could help out with answering these it would be a great help
*what's it like living in Plovdiv?

* Are there certain areas to avoid when looking for accommodation or are there area where their are more expats? (although we do want to embrace the local community)

* how difficult will it be for our children to make friend?

* Any school nursery recommendations?

* any words of caution?

apologies for all the questions however I'm on a timeline for accepting the position, we really want to come but I just want to find out as much as possible beforehand

Your advice is great appreciated

Thanks
Dave

Plovdiv is the best! Been here for 5 months an love it.

There are a few "mahallas" to avoid (the largest one is Stolipinovo), but most of the city is good.

Search for "expats in Plovdiv" on Facebook, and join those groups  - you will then have all the news and be able to ask questions.

Hi Dave,

Plovdiv is one of the best places to live in Bulgaria  - thousands of years of history, rich cultural heritage, nice people, great location, nearby highway and airport, pretty close to a muntain, good medical service, good schools, great night life. I have to add hot summers, not very cold winters, SPA centers close to the city ... and many others.

Cons would include - mists, due to the Maritza river, and as a result air pollution sometimes. Also sometimes floods would happen, when it rains very heavy. Traffic jams too.

*what's it like living in Plovdiv?

- Basically a great place to live!

* Are there certain areas to avoid when looking for accommodation or are there area where their are more expats? (although we do want to embrace the local community)

- YES! Stolipinovo and probably Trakiya !

* how difficult will it be for our children to make friend?

- not difficult at all, especially at the age of 3 and 5 !

* Any school nursery recommendations?

- find one close to where you will live.

* any words of caution?

- nothing special, just make sure your car has PLOVDIV registration plates, and NOT from SOFIA ! :))
