Healthcare in the Virgin Islands

There is no ability to get healthcare in the Virgin Islands. All healthcare in the US is "for profit."  No universal healthcare like in Europe.
The private insurers in the VI don't write individual policies. They only write group policies for employers.
So, if you live in the VI the only way you get healthcare is if you're working, have Medicare from Gov't retirement, get Medicaid (but you have to be a US citizen and poor) or you purchase a international policy which is costly.

It's a most unfortunate mess.

This is a recent update on Healthcare in the US Virgin Islands which is vitally important for those wishing to relocate.

As of last week, the only hospital on St. Croix closed down most of the Medical Surgery unit leaving just a few beds available for Med Surg patients. They cite lack of money.

Also, last week, an Ambulance was needed at a business and neither of the 2 on St Croix were available. Both were stationed at the children's parade in Fredericksted.

The Director of the hosp, is still threatening to close down the hosp if he doesn't get the $50 million from the VI Gov't to pay down debt and keep the hosp operational thus earning him a no vote of confidence from the Drs on the island.

The hosp is still sending patients off island either back to the US or to Puerto Rico for minor biopsies and other tests that they can't or won't perform.

These events should be of grave concern to the residents of the US VI and to those wishing to relocate.

Things will eventually change for the better but not in the immediate foreseeable future sadly.

When/if you find out, please let me know. I am looking into establishing a home health agency in the US Virgin Islands.

The healthcare down here is indeed grim, I'd also like to mention that in order to apply for MAP (Medical Assistance Program) which is the Medicaid program down here, you have to have a job or someone who is providing you with a form of income otherwise you will not be accepted.

Any changes in the healthcare system?  We are wanting to sail down to the VIs and spend some time in the area, but without healthcare facilities that is not an option.
