USB driver out of order - looking for store in Saigon.

Laurent futur Nha Trang

Hello everyone,

One of my USB drives seems to be out of order. I'd really like to recover the data on it...

I know the area of Saigon where there are IT repair stores, but I'd appreciate it if anyone has a specific store to recommend for this type of (major) problem.

Of course, I tried with other USB ports and other PCs (all running Windows).

Unfortunately, I can't access the USB drive (the USB drive is not recognized). So, apparently, it's not possible with data recovery software.

This USB drive remained permanently inserted into my laptop. During the last trip, with the laptop in my travel bag, the drive may have become slightly bent (not visible), causing poor contact.

Thanks in advance. I hope my english will be understandable.

Hi there. Your English, as always, is clear and concise.

I've repaired a few of those drives over the years (as well as USB extension cables, phone data/charging cables etc).

From your post, I've little doubt that the problem your experiencing is due to physical damage to the contact tabs in the head of the drive (the plug) losing contact with the drive's internal circuitry. Sorry I can't give you any specific recommendation on which shop to visit, but any competent tech should be able to confirm my suspicion in very short order.

If you're handy, you can try to do the fix yourself. A soldering iron and some solder will make things a lot easier.

Good luck, and please let the forum know how you make out. Incredibly frustrating, I'm well aware.

Thanks a lot for your very interesting answer. Unfortunately, I am not handy at all :-)

I tried different repair shops in the specialized ward of Saigon : they all refused politely to give attention to this problem.

Damn.

Okay, one last trick I've used (when I was too lazy to do a repair) is to bend the contacts back into place, in situ. It's worked for me a couple of times, and lasted long enough to recover the data.

Looking down into the plug of the drive, you'll see an insulator upon which sit the 4 contacts. Using a small pin/nail, press down on each of the contacts one at a time. You should also gently scuff each contact, but only in an in-out manner. Don't scrape/scuff them in a right-to-left motion as this risks bending them even further.

Press the contacts down firmly, reaching in just past where they disappear into the body of the drive. Be gentle with the scraping/scuffing.

Give it a try. Fingers crossed for you!

Thanks a lot. I will try or a handy friend will try. I will share my experience here after that.

Thanks again.
