RENEWING U.S DRIVERS LICENSE FROM VIETNAM

drutter

Does anyone out there have any experience with this? I know I can get a license here in Vietnam but when I return home for visits I need to rent a car, so I want to keep the license up to date there.

You might try this website:

Yeah.  You can renew online and have it delivered to an US address.  You can either have a friend or relative fedex over, or have him/her come to the airport to pick you up when you go back.

Alternatively I believe car rental companies would even accept photo of your new driver license.

Okay. Thanks for your help gentlemen.

Every state is likely different.  I seem to remember you once mentioning that you had lived in Hawaii but we don't know if that is where you have your license.  In Hawaii, you get one long distance renewal.  The next time has to be in person.  You still have to provide a paper from an ophthalmologist or an optometrist signifying your vision.  That could be a slight problem as I believe Vietnam uses a different scale than the XX/40 used in the US, but you should be able to find a doctor who can work it out.

Great! Thanks for the info THIGV. You are right. I spent 7 wonderful years in Hawaii before coming to VN and that is where I got my last drivers license. I'll have to look into it further. I'm waiting to hear back from Hawaii now.

Right now the Honolulu Police have been instructed not to give tickets for people with expired licenses because COVID restrictions have reduced their already limited productivity to a snail's pace.  I haven't followed it too closely but I will find out more about the situation on the ground and get back to you.  Do you still have a valid address in Hawaii or will the occupants who followed you allow you to use the address on your license?

Here is a link to the Island of Hawaii site.  Renewals Hawaii County.  It actually looks like you could do it without having to hide the fact that you are in another country.  As with most things postal, I would send them a prepaid FEDEX envelope instead of a VNPT one.

Sorry but I made a grammatical edit which automatically locked up the link.  Hopefully it will be released soon.
