COVID-19 and Global recession

I think the worst impacts are being felt in tourist friendly areas, not just foreign tourists.
Vũng Tàu (here) is largely a Vietnamese Resort town with a noticeable Expat presence.
The expats are still here , but the Vietnamese are staying away

Many of the new cases in the last week came into the country that way.
No, I didn't read that but just the daily update from Worldometers Live

My stocks lost thousands of dollars, but I don't rely on them or my savings to live on. Now I hear the US government might give each person $1,200 USD. I don't know if they'll skip me because of the foreign address on my tax return, but it doesn't really matter.
A little over half of my family back in the US is retired, but I don't know if their pensions are secure or not. Two are paid by the state of Illinois, so maybe not.
It doesn't look like I'll be able to make my planned trip back to the US next month, but that's probably a good thing -- my state just reported its first two deaths. If I get COVID-19 here, I guess that will cost me a lot of money, though. Or I might die.
Thanks for the sharing but don't be panic!
Hope everything will be alright soon.
Yeah, if we got problem from COVID-19 it's not easy to treat without money as Vietnam Government has no fund for foreigners!
So prevention is better than cure! Just stay safe. Your landlord can help with rent deduction during this period, if you ask. Many landlords now started to deduct 500-2000k from monthly rent.
Of course many of them try not to support until they understand that they are going to lose you if you move to another place.

According to my GF the government has basically told Vietnamese people to only go out if its necessary & not to travel so suppose the weekend visits from HCMC to VungTau etc will be severely curtailed. On the positive side it must be a pleasant walk along the beach without having to look at all the plastic etc.
The government has also asked the people to wear face masks in like places where people get together, but I have to tell you that from what I see that is generally not happening here. I went shopping this morning, all masked & goggled up hand gel in hand, security was not masked, guy at the parking check in had no mask on & no one took my temperature as I entered the store. Inside all the store attendants were wearing masks though & when I got back to my apartment block parking lot as of this morning the security guards insist they spray your hands before you are allowed in.

Same Same China
I live in Binh Thanh, and I have seen fewer people on the streets, but not a lot fewer. I haven't gone to any of the busy streets, though. Not everyone is wearing masks, but usage has increased.
In my building the guards are always wearing masks now, but there are no special restrictions or tests when you enter. There are written instructions about coronavirus on the wall by the elevator, but I don't know Vietnamese, so I don't know what they say.
I've been staying in my apartment most of the time, going out to get food and meeting a friend a couple of times, but otherwise staying put. Soon I'll have to go to Coop in District 3 for stocking up, so I'll see what it's like on busy streets.
Great to see on BBC world news that much needed medical equipment, supplies & medical personnel from China arrived in Italy last night to help the Corona fight there. So good to see this sort of International co-operation.
I finished packing in 26 cartons yesterday because of no more cartons left
Went to Cho Lon area to buy some more cartons but too expensive -50K for one carton which I bought for 10K before. I thought only face mask price hiked but some more items also not affordable
Then I went to Co op mart for weekly grocery shopping and asked them. They gave me 3 big cartons. They don't sell, just giveaway for members.
Anyway, with that now 29 cartons and the packing work finished!
On the way to Cho Lon, saw many shops open but started to close soon after 5pm.
Co op mart was rush with customers more than ever so I should have to stay in queue for check out, long time!
Today it's more shops closed and very silent street.
I was complaining about noise and air pollution but now it's nice in that sense
COVID-19 affected increased to 91 today in Vietnam !
It was 85 yesterday.

My Facebook friends are not active from yesterday even though they have more free time now. Yeah, most of them use FB from their office WiFi

When I ride out, saw so many private security guard (guard who take care your motorbike in each shop) hesitate to wear masks.
There is no temperature check facility in Co op mart. May be it's impossible to the security guards in there. Anyway 99% wear mask in there including security staffs.
Many apartments already doing temperature check before entry and let the shipping staffs serve from outside gate.

Yes, thanks for the sharing!
It's better stay home unless emergency.
I saw yesterday more people than usual in Co op mart. Possibly they want to stock up for a few days.
I think next week will be more tight in everyday life.
Government is very sharp in this issue and try not spread like as in Italy.
Please update and keep in touch ! Stay safe!

Yeah, like any other difficult time, countries are sharing and helping each other to treat the COVIS-19 affected patients, to prevent spreading and to minimise the death rate!
As long as it affect lungs, there is no quick remedy but take time and treat as severe pneumonia.
'Treat the cause' will be more effective here as in the Homoeopathic medicine.
Just read a post in FB by a guy who got COVID-19 on the way from LA to NYC. he had high fever, shivering, dry throat and body ache within 5 days and he thought it's just common cold and take rest at home. Went to hospital after it got worse!
He says that doctors prescribed to continue Tylenol (paracetamol) even after they see him fall.
It took 2 days to send his blood sample for COVID-19 test which comes out positive on the 4th day.
Doctors were unaware of COVID-19 even in March 2020 ! Yes, his post was today in FB.

The above anecdote is indicative of the shameful extent of the US failure to deal with this pandemic. Failure to adequately test for the virus has been the nation's greatest shortcoming. Vietnam is poised where many other nations were just a few weeks ago. Hopefully, sealing the borders will stave off the virus for a while longer but experiences of others countries tell us that it will inevitably arrive. I, for one, am optimistic that Vietnam will have learned from observing what works and what doesn't, and will handle the problem well.
A big problem is China & Russia. Reports that they are covering up the true extent of the Virus isn’t surprising.
Apparently China “is on the mend”, no new deaths today .
Russia has only had one death. We know how they handled the Chernobyl disaster. There are media reports that they are counting Virus deaths as deaths from other causes. Who knows, most of the deaths are from people who were elderly & knocking on heavens door anyway.
Here in Vietnam, Russians & Chinese are the bulk of tourism .
Wonder when they’ll be coming back. The Chinese are mostly gone & the Russians are leaving daily & given most are on 10 day tours, they’ll be gone by end of this month. Only the business owners with longer Visas will be here, but with NO customers to service they’ll probably bail out as well. I can’t see them opening the borders until global vIrus figures substantially reduce.
But who is doing the counting, and how accurate & transparent are their methods. China, Russia & Vietnam.......I’m sure the old mates have a degree of honesty & integrity in place to report the actual situation as it is & not be swayed by economic pressures from trade & tourism. 🤓
Well so far as we can tell from the reported numbers we have to work with, half the world is shut down and martial law is being inflicted on us all, because old farts and others who were at death's door anyway are dying about 5% faster than usual.
Seems totally legit!
Curiously, I haven't seen any reported numbers for antibody tests... wonder why that is?

Oh hey, go easy, I resemble that remark!
Just come back from Q7.
Normally streets and malls are crowded with families on Sundays but as you can see, it’s empty.

My apartment parking area is full with motorbikes. Most of people stay home or went to hometown.

A lady living opposite of my apartment has lost job 2 days ago. Her husband is working in university as technical staff. I think he may have salary even in this lock down period. Anyway they don’t need to pay rent as it’s their own apartment!
Apartment security tighten the entry of visitors, especially for foreigners.
They should check with security guards or show a COVID-19 negative health certificate.
Be calm and stay safe !!

Yeah I'm casting asparagus in a glass house here. Or something. Now, where did I put my oh look a squirrel!
This business with security goons and temperature checks is worrisome. I've got skin like a bloody vampire, anyone points an IR sensor at me after five minutes in the sun they'll be running for the fire extinguishers because their gadget just burst into flames.
Ontheroad57 wrote:But who is doing the counting...… not be swayed by economic pressures from trade & tourism.
Well, Vietnam government is NOT considering the small revenue from tourism but fighting against COVID-19 with their all mighty!
That we can see clearly from observation.
Soon, all international incoming flights will cancel officially for a short time.
People are co operating very well with this situation.
Let's not to blame nations or government in this situation as it's now in many countries!

Tourism is hardly a small revenue.
But agree the authorities here are doing better than some others. Only objection is the complete lack of reliable government based information and the fact that some officials are exploiting the situation to get extra ' coffee ' money. Most people are cooperating as best they can and as always there are exceptions. Am the only westerner in my apartment block and, despite living here etc, it is getting a little abusive as some are blaming foreigners for bringing the virus when in actual fact, for the most part, wealthy Vietnamese travellers should carry the blame.
The administrators of my apartment block asked everyone to donate to provide sanitisers in the lifts and lobbies. This morning they were deployed as promised. By this afternoon ALL had mysteriously disappeared !
In fairness I need to update the previous post . .. Not all sanitisers have gone missing. Just came across one in the entrance to the underground parking.
Was empty but hey . .. . still had the bottle.

Maybe the reduction in generall illness due to improved hygiene will offset the slightly increased overall mortality rate caused by the virus*
We'll never know for sure, but if it was calculable, that's a bet I'd take.
*the virus itself, not the secondary consequences thereof caused by dubious policy response... that's going to be the real wallop of human misery
charmavietnam wrote:Soon, all international incoming flights will cancel officially for a short time.

They're available with daily updates in Vietnamese. That's one of the sources for my posts.
Here is a list of airlines from passengers tested with COVID-19 positive.
If you were on any of those flights or your relatives or friends, please contact the nearest hospital ASAP.
Hope none of you or relatives in those flights!
Stay safe!

As the thrust of this thread is the economic effects, perhaps this valuable information should be reposted in one of the more general threads on COVID-19.

You are hilarious!
When an OP (like me) attempts to steer the discussion in a thread, you call (me) out for that, yet here you are telling the OP of this thread what "should" be done with his post.
Looks like I'm not the only one with a "problem"...
😁
Ah well.....looks like everything is business as usual across the border in Phnom Penh.
Several flights from China still arriving today & more expected.
Maybe Hun Sen forgot to tell China they weren’t welcome.😆 or maybe the “debt entrapment “ has got them snookered.

You clearly missed my point. Read carefully. I didn't say that the post should be moved. I said that it should be reposted which would mean that it would be in both threads. That would be to improve those threads for some who may not be reading this one. As far as I am concerned, charmavietnam can post anything he wants, anywhere he wants, as he posts valuable information.
THIGV wrote:As the thrust of this thread is the economic effects, perhaps this valuable information should be reposted in one of the more general threads on COVID-19.
Agreed but I just created another thread which we can bring all COVID-19 related issues as we don't have time to run around and contribute in all threads. I just asked Julian to delete my previous threads related to COVID-19
Thanks for the suggestion THIGV

It's bit confusing for members when search with keywords, go to each thread when see the new post notifications, contributing....
Did a quick run to the bank today, must say out here in the suburbs life goes on pretty much as before. Only place I saw shuttered up was a Gym. all coffee shops, street eating, supermarket, hair dressers, beauty salons, beer & BBQ places pretty much business as usual. Street view & entry to apartment photos attached.

Thanks for the sharing but here is story of Vietnam Airlines pilot who messed up Buddha bar & Grill and apartment The Ascent in Thao Dien, Q2
I paid a visit in Thao Dien and An Phu, Q2 today morning.
99% business closed down soon after the 'Vietnam Airlines' Pilot case' except essential commodities like medical stores, markets...
Many people now started to do online sales at their apartment. So many shop front available for rent now as many of the vacated and do online at home. Rent is not cheap in that area to survive until August.
An Phu area is better with crowd and opened shops.

Affected rate increased to 123 in Vietnam, 81171 in China and 511 in India today!

Stay safe, dear friends!
Avoid touching anyone! Keep social distancing from all - 1 meter which can avoid spreading. If you need something, order online.
Relocation completed
Back to new life....
After first day jogging, I understand one thing - this is the place I wait for to live!
And this is the first time searching, renting and moving without anyone’s help!
Misuki park is a great residential village for people who wish to live with less pollution and noise .
RMIT is just 10 minutes ride.
Disclaimer: I am not a real-estate broker or spokeman of the Mizuki Park
Just want to introduce my new place which is very close to RMIT, Phu My Hung but with less pollution and noise. Suitable for who want to live peacefully with a low budget in this COVID-19 situation!
Some photos are below:

Mizuki Park is on Nguyen Van Linh street.
